Covid-19 may infect respiratory centre of brain: CSIR study

Jun 19, 2020 18:26 IST

Researchers from CSIR - Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata have explored the neuro-invasive potential of coronavirus and say that it may infect the respiratory centre of the brain. The team suggests focusing on the respiratory centre of the central nervous system to learn about coronavirus-related mortalities. Published in the journal ACS Chemical Neuroscience, this is the first report that highlights that SARS-CoV-2 may target the PBC of the brainstem that controls respiration and causes the respiratory collapse of Covid-19 patients. Studies suggest the loss of smell is one of the main symptoms of Covid-19 patients, hinting at the involvement of the same route through which coronavirus may enter the brain.
