Covid-19 fallout: World's busiest airport saw a 70% drop in passenger traffic in 2020

With international travel coming to a standstill with the Covid-19 pandemic, not just airlines, even airports have taken a bad hit.

Passenger traffic was down by an unprecedented 70% in 2020 at the Dubai International Airport compared to the previous year, according to its CEO.

The announcement came even as the Dubai International Airport continued to hold on to its title as the world's busiest airport. 

In 2019, the Dubai airport saw 86.4 million passengers, while in 2020, the number dropped to 25.9 million.

However, promoting itself as a pandemic-friendly destination, in December 2020, passenger volumes crossed industry expectations at 2.19 million.
