The Pune police have registered a FIR against three BJP workers for allegedly assaulting an NCP woman member in an auditorium here during a face-off between the two sides at a book release event attended by Union minister Smriti Irani, an official said on Tuesday.
The incident had taken place on Monday when workers of the Congress and NCP, which share power with the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, staged protests against price rise outside a luxury hotel and the Bal Gandharva auditorium, where Irani attended events during her visit to Pune city.
"An offence was registered on late Monday night. We have booked three BJP workers under Indian Penal Code Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and other relevant sections," Deccan Gymkhana police station's senior inspector Murlidhar Karpe said.
As per the FIR, the woman NCP functionary and three other party members had gone to the auditorium to give a memorandum to Irani over the rising inflation and LPG price hike issue.
The NCP woman member in her police complaint later alleged that she and other party functionaries were assaulted and heckled by BJP workers.
Following the face-off, a video showed the police present at the venue escorting four NCP women members out of the auditorium.

Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar had also criticised Owaisi.He had said, "These people know the history of Maharashtra and India. What Aurangzeb did in his era is also known. It is not right for someone from outside Maharashtra to come to the state and create a new issue."
The Shiv Sena also objected to Owaisi's actions, calling it a bid to stoke communal tension in Maharashtra.

Amid claims that a 'shivling' has been found at the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi, a political war of words broke out.
The Bharatiya Janata Party, which is currently in power in Uttar Pradesh, celebrated the news. However, Opposition leaders like Asaduddin Owaisi challenged the shivling claim.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief said that the structure at Gyanvapi was a fountain, not a shivling. Owaisi said, "'Baba' has not been found. Regarding the claim that a shivling has been found, the mosque committee has said that it is a fountain. Every mosque has such a fountain. The other important point is that the court-appointed commissioner did not approach the court. The petitioners' lawyer rushed to court and the judge issued an order. If there was a shivling, then the court-appointed commissioner should have said it."
The AIMIM chief also questioned the validity of the court order to seal the 'wuzu' pond where the alleged shivling was found. He said, "The court's order to seal the mosque area is in violation of the 1991 Act passed by Parliament. Read paragraph 83 of the Supreme Court's verdict in Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi title suit. SC said that the 1991 Act is part of the Constitution's basic structure."
In response, Keshav Prasad Maurya, deputy chief minister of UP, said, "When Congress was in power, it used to bring laws which exacerbate such issues. At that time, the Ram Janmabhoomi campaign was taking place. (The 1991 Act was implemented) to prevent similar campaigns elsewhere. A shivling has not emerged there because of a campaign. A court was hearing a case, and upon its orders, a survey was done. According to the survey report, Baba Vishwanath has been found there. We are all celebrating. Statements by the Muslim side, or other politicians who practice appeasement, should stop. The situation in UP is very good."
The official report of the court-mandated survey of the mosque was not known by May 16. The claim that a shivling has been found was made by one of the petitioners.
A Varanasi court is currently hearing petitions filed by some Hindu women seeking permission to pray regularly at the Shringar Gauri shrine situated at one of the walls of the masjid.

BJP MP Arjun Singh, who had so far been criticising the Centre’s jute policies, on Sunday fired a fresh salvo at the saffron camp top brass, alleging that he "not being allowed to work" in West Bengal, despite being a state vice president of the party.
Singh told reporters at his residence in Bhatpara that grassroots-level members were also finding it difficult to carry out their day-to-day activities as leaders helming the state unit of the BJP were coming in the way of their work.
"Let's be clear. By posting tweets on social media, we cannot dislodge the TMC from power in West Bengal. Those having no connection with the ground reality are calling the shots while proven fighters having mass base are being ignored. How can the BJP achieve its objective then?" said Singh, who had switched over to the saffron camp from the Mamata Banerjee-led party in 2019. The Barrackpore MP claimed that his hands, too, were tied despite being the BJP state vice president.
"It is like I have been gifted a fountain pen without ink and paper," he argued.
Senior leader and BJP MLA from Asansol South Agnimitra Paul, when asked about Singh’s assertions, however, said that he had been given adequate space to work.
"So far I know, Arjun Singh had been given adequate power and space in the state organization. Don't know why he is levelling such charges," she stated.
Meanwhile, TMC MLA from Jagatdal, Somenath Shyam, maintained that it "hardly mattered what Arjun says" as he is still with the BJP.
"Arjun is not trustworthy," Shyam, who was seen sharing dais with Singh during a recent programme, added.

He sought action against the "NCP goons". Ambekar was targeted by NCP workers for posting comments against party supremo Sharad Pawar.
The latest incident comes in the wake of the arrest of Marathi actor Ketaki Chitale, and student Nikhil Bhamre. The two have been accused of sharing objectionable posts targeting Sharad Pawar. Ketaki Chitale has been sent to police custody till May 18.

If we could change government... the Babri Masjid issue has been adjudicated by the courts, and now Gyanvapi Mosque issue has erupted. You are free to disagree with me," he added.

The Bharatiya Janata Party in Tripura has come under attack from the Opposition over an incident allegedly involving a state minister's son.
Pratik Kishore Debbarman allegedly got drunk and misbehaved with Members of Parliament visiting Tripura. Pratik Debbarman is the son of Tripura's deputy chief minister Jishnu Dev Varma.
The incident reportedly occurred on May 11 at a hotel in Agartala. Videos purportedly showing Pratik Debbarman in an inebriated state circulated on social media.
The MPs, part of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs, left Tripura on May 13.
The Trinamool Congress accused the state administration of not taking any action against the BJP minister's son. TMC accused Tripura police of "watching the show" as BJP's "gunda raj" was on "full display".
A BJP leader was quoted by the Economic Times as saying that the issue would be taken up at the "appropriate level".

The Bharatiya Janata Party in Tripura has come under attack from the Opposition over an incident allegedly involving a state minister's son.
Pratik Kishore Debbarman allegedly got drunk and misbehaved with Members of Parliament visiting Tripura. Pratik Debbarman is the son of Tripura's deputy chief minister Jishnu Dev Varma.
The incident reportedly occurred on May 11 at a hotel in Agartala. Videos purportedly showing Pratik Debbarman in an inebriated state circulated on social media.
The MPs, part of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs, left Tripura on May 13.
The Trinamool Congress accused the state administration of not taking any action against the BJP minister's son. TMC accused Tripura police of "watching the show" as BJP's "gunda raj" was on "full display".
A BJP leader was quoted by the Economic Times as saying that the issue would be taken up at the "appropriate level".

Though the apex court had in May 2018 held Sidhu guilty of the offence of "voluntarily causing hurt" to a 65-year-old man in the case, it spared him a jail term and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000.Navjot Sidhu has opposed the plea seeking to enlarge the scope of the road rage case against him citing earlier order of the Supreme Court which held there was no evidence the death of the victim was caused by a single blow.

Authorities have deployed additional security at Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's tomb in Aurangabad after an MNS leader questioned the need for the monument's existence here in Maharashtra and said it should be destroyed, an ASI official said on Wednesday.
Notably, AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi's recent visit to the tomb was criticised by the ruling Shiv Sena in the state as well as the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashta Navnirman Sena (MNS).
On Tuesday, MNS spokesperson Gajanan Kale in a tweet wondered what was the need for Aurangzeb's tomb in Maharashtra and said it should be destroyed so that people would not go there.
After this tweet, some people in Khultabad area, where the tomb is located, tried to lock the structure, which is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
When contacted, ASI's Aurangabad circle superintendent Milan Kumar Chauley told PTI that some people tried to lock the tomb, claiming there was a threat of it being vandalised.
"But, I said unless anything is given to the ASI in writing, I shall not act on it. We have kept the monument open and have added four more security guards there. We also conveyed about the situation to police and they sent a security van there," he said.
Days after Owaisi's visit to the tomb earlier this month, NCP chief Sharad Pawar had wondered if such an act was aimed at creating a new controversy in Maharashtra which is functioning peacefully.
