China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin extended support to India in holding the BRICS summit. India has assumed the BRICS Chairmanship for 2021 and is set to hold this year's summit. "China attaches high importance to the BRICS cooperation mechanism, Wang said and added that the country ‘stands ready to work together to strengthen communication and cooperation in various fields.' China's announcement came as the armies of the two countries began disengagement of troops locked in over an eight-month-long standoff in eastern Ladakh. Wang, however, did not specify whether Chinese President Xi Jinping would attend the summit expected to be held later this year.
