Champions League: Ronaldo scores but Young Boys stun Manchester United 2-1

Sep 15, 2021 07:08 IST | By Editorji News Desk

Champions League campaign for Manchester United didn't start as they would have liked it to as they were stunned 2-1 by Young Boys on Tuesday, a side that had to come through qualifying to reach the group stage.

After a brace in his comeback game in the Premier League, Cristiano Ronaldo was at it again and put United ahead in just the 16th minute. It was CR7's 177th Champions League appearance, joint-most in history. The Red Devils were reduced to 10 men in the 35th minute after Aaron Wan-Bissaka was shown the red card and Cameroon winger Moumi Ngamaleu took advantage of that and equalised in the 2nd-half.

It seemed that the game would end in a draw but a 95th-minute mistake by substitute Jesse Lingard - who had replaced Ronaldo with 18 minutes left, allowed Jordan Siebatcheu to score the winner for Young Boys. Having failed to qualify for last year's knockout stage The Red Devils now host Villarreal in their next Group F game on 29 September.
