Lionel Messi was sent off in the final of the Spanish Super Cup against Athletic Bilbao for violent conduct. The marching orders came in the final minutes of play in extra-time after both teams were locked at 2-goals each at the end of 90 minutes. Antoine Griezmann scored twice for Barcelona but both times Bilbao came back to equalise in the game. For Bilbao, the 3rd and decisive goal came early in the extra-time from Inaki Williams as Barcelona struggled to find an equaliser. Emotions were high right at the end of the game as Messi was sent off for his violent conduct as the most successful team in the tournament history lost the final.
