The GDP had expanded by 3.3% in the corresponding period of 2019-20, according to data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO).
In its second advance estimates of national accounts, the NSO has projected an 8% contraction in 2020-21. In its first advance estimates released in January, it had projected a contraction of 7.7% for the current fiscal as against a growth of 4% cent in 2019-20.
The economy had shrunk by an unprecedented 24.4% in the first quarter this fiscal following the coronavirus pandemic and resultant lockdowns. In the second quarter, the GDP declined 7.3% due to a perk up in economic activities.

Justifying the move, Palaniswami said the economy was yet to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic and this would help the poor redeem the gold they had pledged during the lockdown.
The gold loan schemes with low-interest rates were offered by the Tamil Nadu State Apex Co-operative bank as part of Covid relief measures. The interest rate has been fixed at 6% a year. In this, people could get ₹25,000 to ₹1,00,000 and the loan has to be returned in three months.

A new category has been introduced for skilled labour, whose wage has been fixed at ₹404 per day.
Mamata Banerjee said a total of 56,500 workers in Bengal will benefit from the move. She added that these wages are in parity with rural workers&rsquo; enhanced pay (MNREGA unskilled &amp; semi-skilled). Budget provision for this step has been made available for both FY21 &amp; FY22.

Chowdhury reportedly said he is a &ldquo;bhumiputra&rdquo; of Burdwan and cannot be a mute spectator if the district lags behind on the path of development due to poor leadership.
