Cats can get Covid-19, study shows, WHO to look into role of pets

Apr 09, 2020 13:41 IST

Cats can become infected with the new coronavirus, according to a study published on Wednesday, in journal Science. However, dogs, chickens, pigs and ducks are not likely to catch the infection. The study was aimed at identifying which animals are vulnerable to the virus so they can be used to test experimental vaccines to fight the Covid-19 pandemic. The research has prompted the WHO to take a closer look at transmission of the virus between humans and pets. BJP MP Maneka Gandhi on Tuesday posted a video message saying, a cat could not get or give coronavirus and there was no need for people to abandon their pets.
