Canada fines Facebook $9 million over privacy concerns

May 21, 2020 10:11 IST

Canada's competition watchdog has ordered Facebook to pay a $9-million penalty for making "false or misleading claims about the privacy of Canadians' personal information”. The decision follows an investigation into the social media giant's privacy practices between 2012 and 2018 that pretended to give users control over who saw their personal information on Facebook and Messenger. Instead, the social media giant allegedly shared their data with third-party developers.
