An inexperienced Indian bowling line-up impressed on day 1 of the Brisbane Test but Australia still ended with their noses slightly ahead at 274/5. Tim Paine's decision to bat first seemed to have backfired as the hosts lost both openers with just 17 runs on the board. Steve Smith too fell for 36 but that's when Marnus Labuschagne dropped anchor. He made India pay for 2 dropped catches and smashed his 5th Test ton. Debutant T Natarajan brought India back into the contest with 2 quick wickets but skipper Paine and Cameron Green made sure there wasn't any further hiccup as the duo scored 61 for the 6th wicket. India would need early inroads on day 2 to have their grip back on Australia.
