Brazil: 28% increase in forest fires in the Amazon this July

Aug 02, 2020 13:18 IST

Throwing up some startling statistics, official figures from Brazil show a big increase in the number of fires in the Amazon rainforest in July compared to the same month last year. Satellite images shared by Brazil's National Space Agency revealed the number of forest fires in the region this year was 6803, which is a rise of 28%. Experts blame President Jair Bolsonaro's call for agricultural and mining activities in the Amazon, as the reason behind the spike in forest fires. But under pressure from international investors and environmental agencies, in early July his government banned starting fires in the region.
