Brain imaging predicts PTSD after brain injury: study

Dec 30, 2020 15:35 IST

Researchers using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have found potential brain biomarkers of PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in people with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The study appearing in Biological Psychiatry: Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging is in line with previous findings suggesting that the reduced cortical volume may be a risk factor for developing PTSD. The lead researcher said the report 'paves the way for future studies to look even more closely at how these brain regions may contribute to (or protect against) mental health problems such as PTSD. PTSD is a complex psychiatric disorder brought on by physical and/or psychological trauma and shows symptoms like anxiety, depression and cognitive disturbances.
