'Biodegradable' bags survive in soil after 3 years!

Apr 30, 2019 14:38 IST

Researchers from the University of Plymouth have found 'biodegradable' bags, exposed to the natural environment for three years, still intact and able to carry goods. Researchers also tested 'compostable' bags and they seemed to work better than biodegradable ones, disappearing within three months in the marine environment. These findings raise an important question about whether these so-called 'biodegradable' bags can really be relied on to control the global plastic crisis? The study concluded that there is a lack of clear advantage of using biodegradable materials as an alternative to plastic.
