Bhutan imposes 'sustainable development' fee on Indians

Feb 05, 2020 10:28 IST

With growing numbers of Indian tourists flocking to the Kingdom of Bhutan, the country has imposed a 'sustainable development' fee, effective from July this year. Bhutan's lower house passed a legislation that makes it compulsory for tourists from India, Maldives and Bangladesh to pay a fee of Rs 1200 per day, during their stay in the country. The move comes with an aim to prevent Bhutan from becoming a 'mass tourist destination'.
