The World Health Organization said on Wednesday COVID-19 cases globally had increased nearly 30% over the past two weeks.
Speaking in Geneva, Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus explained that "four out of six of the WHO sub-regions saw cases increase in the last week."
He said that in "Europe and America BA.4 and BA.5" were driving a surge in cases, while a "new sub lineage of BA.2.75 has also been detected" in India.
Tedros also said the organization was "concerned" by the "scale and spread" of monkeypox, saying that there had been "6,000 cases recorded in 58 countries."
He called testing "a challenge" and warned that "it's highly probable that there are a significant number of cases not being picked up."
According to Tedros, Europe is the current epicentre of the outbreak, recording more than 80% of cases globally.
In Africa, cases are appearing in countries not previously affected and record numbers are being recorded in places which have had previous experience with monkeypox before the ongoing outbreak, Tedros said.

UK Home Secretary Priti Patel on Wednesday became the latest senior Cabinet minister to withdraw her support for Boris Johnson as leader of the Conservative Party, after UK media reports said she is part of a contingent of ministers with an ultimatum for the embattled prime minister to step down.
The Indian-origin minister has so far said she has no plans of resigning after Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid made their dramatic exit from the Cabinet, triggering a flurry of ministerial and government aide resignations now adding up to 38.
But ‘The Times’ was the first to report on Wednesday evening that a hardcore Boris loyalist until now, Patel had switched ranks to join a Cabinet ministerial delegation to 10 Downing Street to let him know that the time is up on his leadership. The BBC soon confirmed those reports that she along with Nadhim Zahawi, the newly appointed Chancellor to replace Sunak, were among the group of ministers threatening to resign unless Johnson accepts his time in Downing Street is up.
Patel, 50, is joined by other loyalists such as UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps and Welsh Secretary Simon Hart. The delegation of senior politicians, which also included Policing Minister Kit Malthouse, new Education Secretary Michelle Donelan and Chief Whip Chris Heaton-Harris are believed to have told Johnson that his position as PM is now unsustainable.
It follows a day of high political drama in the heart of Westminster politics in London, with minister after minister stepping down – believed to be the highest number of UK government resignations in a day since the 1930s.
The debate is now around exactly how this drama would end, whether Johnson would finally give in and resign or continue to hold on to his “colossal mandate” from the electorate and demand a leadership election.

Johnson replied that he would consider resigning if he became an “obstruction” to protecting the country’s vital interests, but then immediately insisted that “I’m not going to step down” as he indicated that he did not expect a vote earlier than 2024 – when the next UK general election is due.
But with the ever-increasing volume of dissent within his own party ranks, the chances of a government led by him surviving until then are growing dimmer with every passing hour.

Delhi government schools will soon have CCTV cameras installed and the live feed will be shared with parents, according to sources.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) dispensation had in 2019 announced to install CCTV cameras in all government schools and provide live feed of the classrooms to the parents.
"The PWD is executing the project of construction of classrooms and schools and there is a plan of installing CCTVs in classrooms. There is also a plan to share the feed with the parents. This is all education department’s brainchild we are merely executing it,” a source told PTI.
"The move is aimed at ensuring safety of students and also ensure transparency in teaching system. The education department’s plan says that sharing feed with parents will ensure transparency and let them know what their kid is studying," the source added.
According to officials, to make live CCTV video footage available, the parents will be given individual secured login credentials with individual IDs and passwords. The PWD will update students’ details and parents’ mobile numbers, which will be collected and provided by all government schools, in its software.
However, only those parents will be provided login credentials who have signed consent forms.
"After getting consents from the parents and guardians, the principals will compile the student details in an excel format and submit it to the PWD which will upload the details in the software," a source said.

A BJP worker was detained on Wednesday for allegedly stabbing the son of the party's district president of Rajsamand in Rajasthan after he was stopped from attending a party meeting, police said.
The accused, identified as Kartik, was stopped from entering the venue of the BJP district executive committee meeting in Nathdwara town of Rajsamand district by Arvind Singh, the son of BJP district president Man Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police Chhagan Singh Rajpurohit said.
Kartik attacked Arvind Singh with a knife after the meeting got over. He was admitted to a hospital for treatment where his condition was stated to be critical, the police officer said.
He said that Kartik has been booked under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and taken into custody for interrogation.

Twitter India has taken down the tweet by Toronto-based documentary maker Leena Manimekalai in which she had shared the now controverstial poster of her film 'Kaali'. 
The poster showing Hindu deity Kali smoking and holding a pride flag led to protests and the director was accused of hurting religious sentiments. 
After the poster was 'withheld' by Twitter India, Manimekalai tweeted asking it the social media platform would also withhold tweets of hatemongers who kept sharing the poster that they find objectionable. 
The director had tweeted the poster on Saturday said the film was part of the 'Rhythms of Canada' segment at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto.
The Museum has now cancelled the screening of the short-film following protests by Hindu groups in Canada.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Wednesday rescued all 22 crew members of a vessel that was flooded mid-sea near Gujarat’s Porbandar coast. 
The maritime law enforcement agency swung into action after receiving flooding distress alerts from the crew of MT Global King. It diverted its assets including merchant ships and its newly-commissioned ALH Dhruv choppers to carry out the rescue operation. 
The vessel had left from Khor Fakkan in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and was on its way to Karwar in Karnataka, when there was sudden, uncontrolled flooding on board, prompting the crew to initiate a distress call. It was carrying 6,000 tonnes of Bitumen, a semi-solid form of petroleum also known as Asphalt, onboard.

As Covid cases show an alarming rise in Kerala, the findings of the 4th national serosurvey conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) shows Kerala's seroprevalance is at the bottom with 44.4%, when compared to other states.
The ICMR serosurvey done between June 14 and July 6 showed that at least two-third of the population surveyed in 11 states were found to have developed coronavirus antibodies. Madhya Pradesh leads the chart with 79 per cent seroprevalence, while Kerala is at the bottom with 44.4 per cent.
Kerala on Wednesday recorded 22,056 fresh Covid-19 cases pushing the infection caseload to 33,27,301, with the total death toll in the state rising to 16,457 with 131 more deaths.

The Health Ministry has also flagged the rise of cases in Kerala. Seven districts from Kerala have reported an increasing trend in daily new coronavirus cases during the last four weeks which is a cause of concern.

The report, which also analyses police workforce in the country, claimed while the force has grown by 32 per cent between 2010 and 2020, the share of women is only a "meagre 10.5 per cent" and 41 per cent police stations across India do not have women help desks.
The India Justice Report, 'Police: Improvements, Shortfalls and National Trends- An analysis of Data on Police Organisation 2021', said 5,396 of the total 17,233 police stations in the country do not have a single CCTV camera, and only Odisha, Telangana and Puducherry have all their police stations equipped with at least one camera.
According to the report, only one of the 894 police stations in Rajasthan - the seventh largest state by population - has CCTV cameras installed in its premises, while Manipur, Ladakh and Lakshadweep have none, the report said.
"In its 2021 report, the Data on Police Organisation shows that one in three of the 17,233 police stations do not have a single CCTV camera. Only three states/UTs (Odisha, Telangana and Puducherry) have at least one CCTV in all police stations. Four states/UTs (Rajasthan, Manipur, Ladakh, Lakshadweep) have reported less than 1% police stations with CCTV cameras," it stated.
On women in pollice force, it said, "The share...is 10.5 per cent. The aspiration is to take it to 33 per cent. Nationally, it has taken 15 years from 2006 to 2020 for the nation to increase the share of women personnel in police from 3.3% to 10.5%... As of 2020, no state or union territory has reached the target they have set for themselves," the report said.
However, going by the current rate of increase of women's induction into the force, the report said it will take 33 years to reach 33 per cent women nationally.
Among large and mid-sized states, Odisha will take 428 years to reach 33 per cent, while Bihar will take only eight years.
The Delhi Police, under the Ministry of Home Affairs with 12.4% of women, will take 31 years, it said.
While Gujarat and Bihar will take only seven and eight years, respectively, to reach the target, Mizoram may take 585 years, the reported noted.
"Assuming that the rates of recruitment of women and men in police stay the same, it would take Madhya Pradesh 78 and Uttar Pradesh 21 years," it claimed.
The report also said the share of Scheduled Castes has marginally increased from 12.6 per cent in 2010 to 15.2 per cent in 2020 and that of Scheduled Tribes (STs) has gone up from to 11.7 per cent from 10.6 per cent in the same time period.
The other backward classes have registered a stronger representation from 20.8 per cent in 2010 to 28.8 per cent in 2020 and there are still 5.62 lakh vacancies in police forces across India as of January 2021, the report added.
"Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Assam are functioning with more than 1/4th of their constable and officer posts vacant. Overall vacancies are highest in Bihar (41.8 per cent) and lowest in Uttarakhand (6.8 per cent)," it said.
During 2020, which was the first Covid-affected year, the overall vacancies increased from 20.3 per cent to 21.4 per cent, the report said.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday conveyed to his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi the need for an early resolution of all outstanding issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh and that bilateral ties should be based on "three mutuals" of respect, sensitivity and interest.
At a one-hour meeting in Bali on the sidelines of a conclave of foreign ministers of the G20 nations, Jaishankar and Wang looked forward to the next round of military talks between the two sides at an early date to resolve the border issue.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Jaishankar reaffirmed the importance of "fully abiding" by bilateral agreements and protocols, and the understandings reached between him and Wang in their previous conversations.
"The External Affairs Minister (EAM) called for an early resolution of all the outstanding issues along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh," the MEA said in a statement. Recalling the disengagement achieved in some friction areas, Jaishankar reiterated the need to sustain the momentum to complete disengagement from all the remaining areas to restore peace and tranquillity in border areas.
"He reaffirmed the importance of fully abiding by bilateral agreements and protocols, and the understandings reached between the two ministers during their previous conversations," the MEA said.
"In this regard, both ministers affirmed that the military and diplomatic officials of the two sides should continue maintaining regular contact and looked forward to the next round of senior commanders' meeting at an early date," it said.
Jaishankar also reiterated that the India-China relationship is best served by observing mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interests. The MEA said Jaishankar also recalled his meeting with Wang Yi in Delhi in March and reviewed the progress of some key issues discussed then, including the return of students.
"The EAM stressed the need for expediting the process and facilitating the return of students on an early date," the MEA said.
India has been pressing for quick disengagement of troops from all the remaining friction points in eastern Ladakh to ensure de-escalation of the situation, asserting that peace and tranquillity along the border are pre-requisite for progress in overall ties.

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear on Friday the bail plea of Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair in connection with a case registered against him in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly outraging religious feelings. 

Senior Advocate Colin Gonsalves, who is representing Mohammed Zubair, told the Supreme Court on Thursday, that there is a threat to his life as people out there are threatening him, while urging the court to list the matter urgently.&nbsp;

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear on Friday the bail plea of Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair in connection with a case registered against him in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly outraging religious feelings. The court responded to Zubair's plea for an urgent hearing citing 'death threats' that he has been receiving.
The listing, however, awaits the Chief Justice of India's approval on Friday.
Senior Advocate Colin Gonsalves, who is representing Zubair,told the vacation bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and JK Maheshwari, which heard the plea on Thursday, that there is a threat to his life as people out there are threatening him, while urging the court to list the matter urgently.&nbsp;
The counsel said the Allahabad High Court had denied anticipatory bail to Zubair saying it was premature and he was arrested 2-3 days later.
On July 2, a Delhi court had denied him bail and had sent him to 14-days judicial custody.
An FIR was lodged against Zubair in Uttar Pradesh under IPC section 295A (deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings) and section 67 of the IT Act on a complaint by Hindu Sher Sena Sitapur district president Bhagwan Sharan on June 1.
Zubair was arrested by the Delhi Police on June 27 for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through a tweet he had posted in 2018. The arrest was made following a complaint raised by a Twitter user&mdash;Hanuman Bhakt who said that a tweet posted by Zubair in 2018 of a movie poster that was released in 1983 had hurt religious sentiments of the followers of a Hindu deity.
The Delhi Police has has since then&nbsp;invoked new provisions&mdash;sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 201 (destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 35 of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act&mdash;against Zubair.&nbsp;

A police officer was transferred after a purported video showing him allegedly making objectionable comments against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath came to the fore, officials said on Thursday.
Station House Officer of Asandra police station Dhyanendra Pratap Singh allegedly the comments against the chief minister while talking to someone in his office room.
A journalist forwarded a video of this conversation to BJP district president Shashank Kushumesh, who in turn, lodged a complaint against the officer with the Superintendent of Police Anurag Vats a couple of days ago.
Kushumesh alleged that the SHO was trying to create a rebellion against the government by making such comments in public.
Police said an inquiry is underway.

Lalan Kumar, an assistant professor at Nitishwar College in Bihar's Muzzaffarpur, returned his salary amounting to nearly Rs 24 lakh that he had earned since joining the job in September 2019. He did so as his "conscience did not allow" him to draw his pay without doing what he was hired to do&mdash;teach, as no student turned up for a single class.
"My conscience does not allow me to take a salary without teaching... even during online classes, there were only a handful of students present for Hindi classes. If I take a salary without teaching for five years, it would be academic death for me. I heard my inner voice and decided to return my salary for two years and nine months to the university,&rdquo; said Lalan while speaking to the media.
The 33-year-old professor, on Tuesday, signed a Rs 23,82,228 cheque to the registrar of BR Ambedkar Bihar University (BRABU)&mdash;a state university of which the college is a constituent.&nbsp;
Nitishwar College has been affiliated to BRABU since 1976 and offers undergraduate courses in Arts and Science.
While Lalan's action is being praised by many including BRABU's registrar, the college principal, Manoj Kumar, has raised doubts over his motive and dismissed it as a mere 'tactic' to get transferred to the postgraduate department (PG).&nbsp;
Lalan, who has a PhD and MPhil from Delhi University, has applied to the PG department to be "more involved" in academics.
As the three parties involved spar over the issue, it has brought to the core the larger issue of students' absenteeism at colleges in Bihar.
