The Tamil Nadu government on Monday extended the lockdown in the state till July 31. On Monday, the state reported 3949 fresh cases, taking the state tally beyond 86,000. Chennai recorded its highest single day spike with 2167 cases. Strict curbs will continue in Chennai and Madurai till July 6 post which they will be allowed to revert to the relaxed lockdown phase. The decision on extending the lockdown came just hours after a expert committee set up to advise the Tamil Nadu government on tackling Covid-19 favoured restrictions based on the scenario in specific regions and has not recommended extension of the lockdown in force in the state till Tuesday.
