After hot winter, scientists warn of marine heatwave in New Zealand

Nov 18, 2020 19:06 IST

Climate forecasters in New Zealand have warned that the nation is at the brink of a marine heatwave after recording temperatures nearly two degrees above average in coastal waters off the North Island. With above-average temperatures reported throughout October and after a record hot winter, a marine heatwave is building in the region, said National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research experts. A marine heatwave refers to an extended period of extremely warm ocean temperatures and is associated with severe biodiversity changes and disease.
