After 18 yrs of war, US-Taliban set to sign deal

Feb 29, 2020 12:49 IST

The United States and the Taliban it toppled from power in Afghanistan are poised to sign a peace deal on Saturday. The two sides will sign the agreement in the Qatari capital of Doha more than 18 years since President George W. Bush ordered bombing in response to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The agreement will set the stage for the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, one of the main campaign promises of president Donald Trump. Under the agreement, the Taliban promise not to let extremists use the country as a staging ground for attacking the U.S. or its allies.
