&nbsp; The Supreme Court Tuesday took&nbsp;suo&nbsp;motu&nbsp;cognizance of the problems and the miseries of migrant&nbsp;labourers&nbsp;who have been stranded in different parts of the country after the Covid-19 lockdown.&nbsp;A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, Sanjay Kishan Kaul and M R Shah issued notice to the Centre, states and Union Territories and sought their replies by May 28 on the steps taken to redeem the situation.&nbsp;The top court listed the matter for May 28 and asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to assist it on the issue.&nbsp;The top court&rsquo;s notice comes barely 10 days after another bench refused to intervene on a petition that wanted the government to identify stranded&nbsp;migrant workers, take care of their needs and provide free transport to them.&nbsp;

The Centre has said a total of 60,490 patients have recovered so far from coronavirus across the nation which means the recovery rate continues to improve and presently it is 41.61%. The Bharatiya&nbsp;Mazdoor&nbsp;Sangh, RSS'&nbsp;labour wing, has decided to increase its offensive against the state governments that have made changes to the labour laws.Various state governments including BJP-ruled Madhya&nbsp;Pradesh, Uttar&nbsp;Pradesh&nbsp;and Gujarat have made changes to the labour laws in favour of factory owners and employers to increase output and make up for the loss that was incurred due to the lockdown. NCP Supremo Sharad Pawar on Tuesday scoffed at the rumours of a rift within the Maharashtra ruling coalition. Prime Minister Narendra&nbsp;Modi&nbsp;held a high-level security review meeting with the National Security Advisor, Chief of Defence Staff and the three Service chiefs on Tuesday over the border standoff with China. The Indian Council of Medical Research has said that no major side-effects of hydroxychloroquine have been found in studies in India and its use should be continued in preventive treatment for COVID-19 but under strict supervision. While addressing reporters on Tuesday, ICMR's&nbsp;Director General Balram Bhargava&nbsp;said except for nausea, vomiting and occasional palpitation&nbsp;they have found no other major side-effects of&nbsp;hydroxychloroquine.&nbsp;The ICMR's statement came against the backdrop of the World Health Organization (WHO) suspending the testing of the drug in COVID-19 patients temporarily in its global study following safety concerns.

As many as 960 foreigners, members of the Tablighi Jamaat, who came to India on tourist and e-visas, are liable to face a jail term of up to five years, Delhi Police told the High Court. The Delhi police pointed out that these foreigners violated their visa conditions by joining the religious congregation in Delhi's Nizamuddin, and can be prosecuted under Section 14 of the Indian Foreigners Act, 1946. Section 14 provides for penalty for contravention of provisions of the Act, and prescribes a jail term of maximum five years.

Delhi sweltered under a scorching heat wave on Tuesday as the mercury soared to 47.6&deg;C in Palam area and most places recorded maximum temperatures six notches above normal.&nbsp;The Safdarjung Observatory, which provides representative figures for the city, recorded a maximum of 46 degrees Celsius. However, the IMD&nbsp;said that&nbsp;some respite from heat was expected on Thursday due to a fresh western disturbance and easterly winds. Dust storm and thunderstorm with winds gusting up to 60 kilometres per hour is likely over the National Capital Region on Friday and Saturday, the IMD&nbsp;added.&nbsp;

Railway Minister Piyush&nbsp;Goyal&nbsp;lashed out at Maharashtra govt again on Twitter over the issues of special trains to ferry migrants home. The minister tweeted that the Railways had arranged for 145 trains to operate from Maharashtra&nbsp;but only 13 trains had been used till 3pm due to lack of passengers. He further tweeted requesting Maharashtra&nbsp;govt to cooperate and bring&nbsp;migrant passengers to station on time to avoid delays. The Indian Railways too issued a statement that it had mobilised 145 to depart from Maharashtra&nbsp;at a very short notice but due to lack of passengers the first train left the station only at 12.30pm. Railway&nbsp;minister's tweet and Indian Railways statement comes as Piyush&nbsp;Goyal&nbsp;and the Maharashtra&nbsp;govt are engaged in a war of words on twitter over shramik&nbsp;trains since the last two days.&nbsp;

According to a study by the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative or CHRI, 12 people have died for alleged violation of the national lockdown due to police brutality. The study tracked the deaths of 12 people across the country from March 25th to April 30th based on media reports. 3 of the 12 were cases of suicide wherein the victims took their lives due to the humiliation because of the public beating. Out of the 12, in only 2 cases the police personnel involved have been suspended pending enquiry. 3 deaths were reportedly custodial. Highlighting the lack of police accountability, the human rights group&nbsp;has sent a petition to the National Human Rights Commission for investigation into these 12 deaths.

Severe heatwave conditions prevailed in parts of Rajasthan on Tuesday, with the mercury touching 50 degrees Celsius in Churu district. This is the second-highest maximum temperature recorded in Churu district in the month of May in the last 10 years. The district had recorded a high of 50.2 degrees Celsius on May 19 in 2016.&nbsp;The weather office has predicted severe heat wave conditions will continue in parts of central and north India till Saturday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Congress on Tuesday accused Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi&nbsp;Adityanath&nbsp;of targeting Dalits by saying that a large proportion of migrant workers returning home are infected with coronavirus.&nbsp;Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi&nbsp;Vadra&nbsp;had on Monday taken on&nbsp;Adityanath&nbsp;over his remark that 75 per cent of UP workers returning from Mumbai are infected, questioning the math.&nbsp;In a video clip,&nbsp;Adityanath&nbsp;was also heard saying that 50 per cent of workers returning from Delhi have coronavirus and 25-30 per cent from other states are similarly infected.&nbsp;The Congress said&nbsp;most migrant workers are Dalits or belong to &lsquo;backward castes&rsquo; and&nbsp;CM&rsquo;s misleading statement could lead to&nbsp;social hatred.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After a senior cardiologist was detained by police in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday intercepted the official vehicle of the Chief Medical Officer&nbsp;Bandipora&nbsp;while he was&nbsp;enroute&nbsp;to a quarantine&nbsp;centre.&nbsp;Two videos of the CMO Dr&nbsp;Tajamul&nbsp;Hussain shouting at the police personnel posted at a checkpoint in the northern district have gone viral on social media.&nbsp;Dr&nbsp;Tajamul&nbsp;was travelling in his official vehicle, on which an emergency light is installed. In the video, he is seen telling the police officials&nbsp;you&nbsp;are harassing doctors.&nbsp;

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday urged the government to come clean on the border standoff with China. Demanding transparency from the government on what is going on, Gandhi said that "it becomes difficult for us to have a position without understanding the facts". He added that the government should make it clear to the people of India what exactly is happening on the border.&nbsp;

The Rajasthan government has restored the working hours for factory workers to eight hours per day.&nbsp;On April 24, the government had increased the working hours to 12 from 8 hours per day to reduce the requirement of workers in all the registered factories due to the coronavirus spread.&nbsp;The order issued last month to increase working hours was initially for three months for factories registered under the Factories Act. But it has been withdrawn in a month's time.&nbsp;Many state governments had faced flak over the move, with&nbsp;labour&nbsp;rights activists calling the changes in the&nbsp;labour&nbsp;laws dictatorial.&nbsp;

The Indian Army has increased its presence in Uttarakhand following reports of a Chinese troop build-up in an area on their side of the LAC, The Indian Express has reported. In eastern Ladakh also the Army has inducted additional troops and has enhanced round-the-clock surveillance of the LAC through UAVs. The report added that the Army has also increased its presence along the boundary with China in Uttarakhand following reports that Chinese troops have been deployed in increased numbers in the Guldong sector.

Union Minister Sadananda Gowda landed in Bengaluru on Monday and refused to quarantine himself, as is mandated by the Karnataka govt for every individual arriving in the state. Gowda justified it, saying that these rules apply to citizens but not to him, as he has important responsibilities. Soon after the Karnataka govt amended its quarantine order to exempt ministers and state officials engaged on Covid duties.
