A 'skeleton' lake in India's Roopkund

Oct 29, 2018 14:24 IST

The 'skeleton' lake of Roopkund in Uttarakhand is frozen for the most part of the year with over 200 human skeletons strewn on the ground. Studies conducted in 2004 show, that the skeletons are of pilgrims who once trekked the area and died of a major hailstorm in 850 AD. Since no roads lead directly to the lake, it takes 3 days to reach and tour the lake. A lot of measures are being taken to preserve the skeletons as a unique marker of the lake.
