Kerala's Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute has received ICMR's approval to explore the potential of a plant-based drug to treat Covid-19. The institute has an ongoing project called 'anti-viral from medicinal plants of Western Ghats' during which researchers found a particular plant extract effective in fighting viral infections chikunguniya and dengue. These findings are in the process of obtaining a patent. They will, now, analyse whether that particular lead molecule will be able to fight Covid-19. The director of the institute stated that the name of the plant cannot be revealed yet, but it is commonly found in Kerala. The test of the extraction will be conducted at the National Institute of Virology in Pune.
