After a gap of 88 years, Mumbai Police is all set to welcome a mounted police unit for crime patrol, crowd and traffic management. Cops will patrol on horses, who will be deployed on duty after their participation in the Republic Day parade at Shivaji Park this year, according to Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh. The practise was discontinued in 1932 after ever-growing vehicular traffic. The horses will help keep a check on crowded areas, during marches, festivals and at beaches. Within the next six months, the unit will have a sub-inspector, 30 horses and four havaldars among others.
