With international arrivals dropping by 74 per cent and worldwide destinations welcoming 1 billion fewer international arrivals than in the previous year (2019), the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has confirmed 2020 as the 'worst year on record' for global tourism.
'The collapse in international travel represents an estimated loss of $1.3 trillion in export revenues, that is more than 11 times the loss recorded during the 2009 global economic crisis,' the UNWTO report said.
The report projects a mixed response for tourism recovery as more than 50 per cent of those surveyed said they expect a rebound to occur only in 2022 as compared to 21 per cent in October 2020.
