As the world woke up on the morning on December 3rd, a young boy from the lanes of Rosario went on to pick up his 6th Ballon D’or award. That young boy is not young any longer. Neither does he reside in Rosario anymore. He is, as many might call, the greatest player that football has produced. He is Lionel Andres Messi. Argentina is no stranger to producing great footballers. The rich football legacy of the country is match to no other. Be it Gabriel Batistuta, or the great Diego Maradona, the country has its own rich pool of greats. But Messi rose above them all, and it was never an easy road. Leading up to the awards, many argued and questioned if the 32-year-old Barcelona forward’s glory days were over? Twelve months ago, when Luka Modric claimed the honor many believed that he had finally ended a decade of the Messi-Ronaldo dominance. But as the Argentine star walked up the stage to lift his record 6th award, beating Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, and Cristiano Ronaldo, he proved that his consistent brilliance has very few equals around the world. Messi’s 6th title also makes him the most successful player in the history of the prestigious award. This was also his first Ballon D’or after 2015. The Barca star has scored 56 times for his club and country in 2018-19, top-scoring with 36 goals guiding his club to the La Liga title. But he did not have a great Copa America with Argentina, for which he faced heavy criticism for failing to perform for his country. The 2019 Ballon D’or was possibly the toughest and saw Messi pitted against the Premier League giants. Having been out with injury for a major part of the current season, many wrote him out of the running for the coveted trophy. And with Virgil van Dijk’s stellar show for Liverpool it was a tough contest. There have been grumblings whether the Argentine ‘deserves’ the recognition over his peers, but his masterclass against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions league and Athletico Madrid in the La Liga, has proved that he remains a cut above the rest. Messi’s excellence in the football field boasts of a lot more than the 6 Ballon D’or in his trophy cabinet. The little kid from Rosario has gone on to redefine what is and isn’t possible in the football field. Over the last decade, what Messi has achieved has underlined the prodigy that he is- a combination of phenomenal touch and deadly acceleration. He has earned the claim to be called the greatest player and a true wizard of the game.
