300,000 garment workers stuck in factory hostels: report

Apr 08, 2020 22:04 IST

According to a Reuters report, the three-week nationwide lockdown has left about 300,000 Indian garment workers stranded in cramped factory hostels, where rooms are shared by up to a dozen people and social distancing is difficult to practice. This is raising serious concerns that workers living in such accommodations in Tamil Nadu could unknowingly be spreading the virus, says the report. About 40,000 garment factories and spinning mills operate in Tamil Nadu, with many running hostels on their premises to house their staff - most of whom are young women and migrant workers, states the report.
