Afghan officials say two Taliban attacks targeted Afghan security checkpoints in the country's west and east, killing at least 23 security forces personnel. In western Ghor province, 18 policemen and pro-government militia were killed and seven were wounded in an hours-long gun battle. In eastern Logar province insurgents over-ran an army checkpoint in the district of Baraki Barak, killing five soldiers.
