Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood were Thursday named in a spin-heavy provisional Australian squad for this year's Twenty20 World Cup after their Ashes campaign was ruined by injury.
Test skipper Cummins only played one of the five Ashes Tests against England, in Adelaide, as he slowly recovers from a lower back issue, while Hazlewood (Achilles) missed the entire series.
Cummins will have another scan on his back later this month to determine whether he will be fit for the tournament in India and Sri Lanka beginning on February 7.
Hazlewood and big-hitter Tim David (hamstring) are also on the comeback trail, but are expected to be ready.
"Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Tim David are tracking well and we are confident they will be available for the World Cup," chief selector George Bailey said.
"This is a preliminary squad so should changes need to be made they will ahead of the support period."
Left-arm spinners Matt Kuhnemann and Cooper Connolly were additions to a largely settled 15-man squad, alongside chief tweaker Adam Zampa and part-timer Glenn Maxwell.
Australia's group-stage matches are all being played in Sri Lanka with the expectation of spin-friendly surfaces.
In a surprise, Australia opted against a back-up wicketkeeper for Josh Inglis and no left-arm pace replacement for Mitchell Starc, who has retired from the 20-over game.
The fast-bowling attack is led by Cummins and Hazlewood, along with Nathan Ellis and Xavier Bartlett, plus all-rounders Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis. All are right-handers.
"The T20 side has enjoyed a long run of recent success which enabled the panel to choose a balance of players across the variety of conditions Sri Lanka and India may present," Bailey added.
Australia open their account on February 11 in Colombo against Ireland.
They will name a separate squad for a T20 series against Pakistan that precedes the World Cup.

Shaheen, who has struggled in his maiden appearance in the BBL, had spent a long time out from cricket in 2021-22 after undergoing knee surgery following an injury while fielding in a Test in Sri Lanka.
A PCB official said that Shaheen had been called back after discussions with Cricket Australia (CA) as the initial feedback was that he required complete rest and time to recover from the injury. He said that the seriousness of the injury and the potential timeline for recovery will be determined after his meeting with the board's doctors.
Shaheen expressed disappointment on social media at leaving the tournament prematurely. "I have enjoyed myself a lot playing for Brisbane and I am sad that I will not be able to finish the season with the team," he said in a statement released by the BBL side. "Hopefully, I will be back in the fields soon," he wrote.
Shaheen featured in four matches for Brisbane Heat, claiming two wickets at an average of 76.50. In his first match, he was taken off the attack after bowling two full-toss deliveries.
Shaheen was not included in the Pakistan squad for a three-match T20I series in Sri Lanka (January 7-11) even before he sustained the injury.

The 54-year-old, who played 67 Tests between 1992 and 2006 and 208 one-day internationals, was admitted on Boxing Day last week after falling ill while lying down.
Australian media said he was being treated for meningitis, which can be deadly.
Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
"He is getting the best of treatment," Test great and close friend Adam Gilchrist told The Australian newspaper.
"Amanda (his partner) and his family know that a lot of people are sending their prayers and best wishes."
Former Australian coach Darren Lehmann, a long-time teammate of Martyn's, also sent support.
"Lots of love and prayers... keep strong and fighting, legend. Love to the family," he wrote on X.
Known as one of the game's great strokemakers, Martyn became a key figure in Steve Waugh's all-powerful Australian side, hitting 13 centuries and averaging 46.37.
He was also part of the Australia team that won the 2003 ODI World Cup, cracking 88 not-out in the final against India in a match-winning partnership with Ricky Ponting.
He retired in 2006 during the Ashes series and had kept a low-profile since.

The contract of Mahmood, a former Test all-rounder, runs until March 2026 but he has been given an early release. Pakistan&rsquo;s next Test assignment isn&rsquo;t until March 2026.
"Since Azhar&rsquo;s contract ends in March and Pakistan&rsquo;s Test assignments begin from March 2026, it would be the best for the Board to start planning ahead for a new head coach," a reliable source close to the Board said.
Mahmood, who has taken up different positions in the national team in the last few years, had a two-year contract running with the Board. He was named head coach of the Test side last year.
The source said that the PCB has now started the search for a new head coach of the Test side, and there could be an overhaul of the support staff as well.
Pakistan&rsquo;s assignments in the ICC World Test Championship start in March 2026 with a tour of Bangladesh followed by tours to West Indies in July and England in August-September. In November-December 2026 and March 2027, Pakistan will host Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
The Test side has had interim coaches in Aaqib Javed and Mahmood ever since the PCB and Australian Jason Gillispie parted ways in early 2024 because of differences over selection matters.
The PCB is also on the lookout for a head coach for the national women's team as Muhammad Wasim&rsquo;s contract was not renewed after the ICC World Cup in September-October.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground's seam-friendly pitch for the fourth Ashes Test was rated "unsatisfactory" Monday by the International Cricket Council after it ended inside two days.
Under the world governing body's four-tier rating system "unsatisfactory" is the second lowest, characterising a pitch "favouring the bowlers too much".
It broke the venue's streak of "very good" ratings for  the past three Boxing Day Tests and earned it one demerit point.
"The MCG pitch was too much in favour of the bowlers," said match referee Jeff Crowe.
"With 20 wickets falling on the first day, 16 on the second day and no batter even reaching a half-century, the pitch was 'unsatisfactory' as per the guidelines and the venue gets one demerit point."
England beat Australia by four wickets in the final session of day two, with no batsman scoring more than 46 across the four innings.
The first Test in Perth also ended in two days, but that pitch was rated "very good" by the ICC.
MCG curator Matt Page and his team left 10 millimetres (0.4 inches) of grass on the wicket, providing the seamers with movement and bounce and making batting treacherous.
The carnage left Cricket Australia facing Aus$10 million (US$6.7 million) in revenue shortfall, with tickets for day three and four needing to be refunded.
"We  were  disappointed  for the fans holding tickets for days three and four, and also the millions of fans excited to watch the action in Australia and around the world, that the pitch did not provide the MCG's customary  balance  between bat and ball," said Cricket Australia's chief of cricket James Allsopp.
"We appreciate the  outstanding  work the MCG staff have done over recent years producing  excellent Test match pitches," he added.
Before the ICC decision was handed down, Australia coach Andrew McDonald came to the defence of Page and warned against authorities meddling in pitch preparation.
McDonald said Page had done an "outstanding" job over the years and the batsmen should also shoulder some of the blame for not scoring enough runs.
"The perspective that I always use is we have bad Test matches as well -- this Test we weren't at our best and sometimes these things can happen.
"We support him in what he's done and are really proud of the evolution of the MCG.
"He's found a nice balance for a long period of time."
Cricket Australia are set to undertake their own end-of-season review of the management of Test wickets.
Chief executive Todd Greenberg has suggested a more interventionist approach might be needed, with shorter Tests "bad for business".
But McDonald said he was not in favour of any interference, with curators in Australia traditionally independent when preparing pitches, both from captains and Cricket Australia.
"I don't want to get to a situation ... where we are asking for specific surfaces and tailor-made," McDonald said.
"I don't think Australia will ever go there, and I don't think they've ever been there, to my knowledge."
Australia lead the series 3-1 with the fifth and final Test in Sydney starting Sunday.

It was the biggest cricket crowd ever at the cavernous arena, exceeding the 93,013 who watched the 2015 World Cup final, and they witnessed the home side collapse with Josh Tongue grabbing 5-45.
But England fared even worse, slumping to 16-4 and never recovering, leaving Australia to face one over before stumps, which nightwatchman Scott Boland safely negotiated with Travis Head at the other end.
Australia were 4-0 at the close with Boland on four, 46 ahead, with Head yet to face a ball.
Australia bowler Michael Neser, who took 4-45, was not making any predictions for the second innings after a day when the ball dominated the bat.

With the Ashes urn in their hands, Australia decided to rule Cummins out of the two remaining Tests. The 32-year-old Cummins said on Friday he will now take rest before targeting the T20 World Cup which begins in early February.
"Feeling good, so got through Adelaide unscathed so pretty happy," he told Channel 7 during the lunch break on the first day of the Boxing Day Test here.
"As of a few weeks ago, was still coming back from a back injury so playing back-to-back Test matches was pretty high risk.
"Cool our heels for a little bit with T20 World Cup next month," Cummins added.
His optimism came after coach Andrew McDonald said earlier this week that Cummins was not a certainty for Australia's T20 World Cup campaign.
Australia's first match is on February 11 against Ireland in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Although Cummins captains the Test and ODI teams, all-rounder Mitch Marsh leads Australia in the shortest format.
Cummins also said veteran spinner Nathan Lyon is facing a lengthy period on the sidelines following surgery on his hamstring. Lyon suffered the injury on the final day of the Adelaide Test and immediately went under the knife.

"He had surgery a couple of days ago, so he'll have a lengthy layoff, I don't know exactly, but will be at least a few months," Cummins said.

Bangladesh halts IPL 2026 telecast after KKR releases pacer Mustafizur Rahman following BCCI directive; safety concerns also raised ahead of T20 World Cup.

Bangladesh on Monday banned the broadcast of IPL's upcoming season in the wake of pacer Mustafizur Rahman's ouster from the world's biggest T20 league on BCCI instructions.
A statement from Bangladesh information and broadcast ministry stated that no "logical reason" was given by the BCCI while instructing IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders to release Rahman from its 2026 roster. The IPL is due to start on March 26.
The move to ban IPL broadcast came a day after Bangladesh refused to travel to India for next month's T20 World Cup and requested the International Cricket Council to shift all its league games to Sri Lanka, the co-host of the tournament.
"No logical reason for such a decision (Rahman's release) by the BCCI is known, and such a decision has saddened, hurt, and aggrieved the people of Bangladesh," read the government notification.
"In this situation, until further notice, it is requested by order to stop the broadcasting/telecasting of all matches and programs of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
"This order is issued with the approval of the proper authority and in the public interest," said the signed by assistant secretary Feroz Khan.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, while announcing the diktat to release Rahman, had merely stated that it was being done because of "developments all around", without explaining the specifics.
The Indo-Bangladesh relationship has hit a rocky patch after the ouster of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India in August last year following anti-government protests.
She was sentenced to death in absentia by a tribunal for her alleged role in a deadly crackdown during the agitation in which several students were killed.
Hindus have been targetted for violent attacks since Hasina's ouster.

An imperious Joe Root hit a magnificent 160 to drive England to 384 in the fifth and final Ashes Test on Monday before Travis Head let rip to haul Australia back into the contest with a rapid-fire unbeaten 91.
Root's superb innings, his 41st ton to match Ricky Ponting, was only ended courtesy of a brilliant caught-and-bowled by Michael Neser, who finished with 4-60.
Australia were left to negotiate the final session of day two at a sold-out Sydney Cricket Ground, which they did for the loss of Jake Weatherald (21) and Marnus Labuschagne (48).
By stumps the hosts -- who have already won the series -- had raced to 166-2 with nightwatchman Neser on one alongside Head.
"I think it's set interestingly," Root told TNT Sports.
He added: "Most important for us is not panicking, not dwelling too much on what happened here.
"It's how we respond tomorrow morning and maximise that chance first up."
Weatherald, who needed a big score to stave off the critics, again failed to live up to expectations since making his debut at the first Test in Perth.
He was dropped twice in the space of three balls, by Root then Ben Duckett, before Ben Stokes trapped him lbw.
But Head, who like Root has slammed two centuries this series, was in the zone.
He clattered three boundaries off the second over from Matthew Potts, in the side for the injured Gus Atkinson, and there was no let-up, blitzing a quickfire 50 off 55 balls.
Labuschagne was also in good touch, stroking seven boundaries before thick-edging Stokes to Jacob Bethell at gully.
Labuschagne and Stokes had clashed between overs, with the England captain aiming an expletive at the batsman.
The hosts lead the series 3-1 and have already retained the Ashes, with England desperate for another win after victory at the previous Test in Melbourne.
"Fresh start tomorrow," said Neser.
"But the wicket seems to be quickening up just a little bit, so we're going to be mindful of that tomorrow."

England resumed at 211-3 but lost Harry Brook (84), Stokes (0) and Jamie Smith (46) before lunch.
Will Jacks (27), Brydon Carse (1) and Josh Tongue (0), along with Root, departed in the second session.
The day belonged to Root, who started on 72 and reached an almost chanceless century off 146 balls to reaffirm his status as an all-time great.
The 35-year-old had begun the series under pressure after failing to make a hundred in Australia over three previous Ashes tours.
He snapped the drought with an unbeaten 138 in the day-night Test at Brisbane and his exploits in Sydney drew him level third with Australia's Ponting on the all-time century-makers' list, with 41.
Only India's Sachin Tendulkar (51) and South Africa's Jacques Kallis (45) have scored more Test centuries.
Root and Brook came together with England in trouble at 57-3 on Sunday, with both eyeing big centuries on an ideal batting deck.
But Brook only lasted five balls on Monday, adding six to his overnight 78 before dabbing at a Scott Boland delivery and edging into the safe hands of Steve Smith at slip.
It ended a 169-run partnership, not just England's best of the series but the biggest by either team, surpassing Head and Alex Carey's 162 in Adelaide.
Stokes only survived 11 balls before getting the faintest of edges off Mitchell Starc to Carey.
Jamie Smith lived dangerously and was fortunate to survive after chipping Cameron Green to Labuschagne at cover on 22. He began walking off but replays showed Green overstepped and it was a no-ball.
He added another 24 before medium-pacer Labuschagne bagged him in his first over.
The run rate slowed significantly after lunch when the new ball was taken, but Root persisted, passing 150 for a 17th time, just one behind the legendary Don Bradman and three short of Tendulkar.
He and Jacks put on 52 for the seventh wicket until Jacks sent a leading edge to Green in the gully off Neser. Root was ninth man out and Tongue followed without any addition to the score.

Australian Test great Damien Martyn has woken from an induced coma following meningitis, with ex-teammate Adam Gilchrist on Sunday calling it "a miracle".
The 54-year-old Martyn, who played 67 Tests between 1992 and 2006 and 208 one-day internationals, fell seriously ill late last month and was rushed to hospital.
The former batsman was diagnosed with meningitis, an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
"It's been an unbelievable turn of events in the last 48 hours," Gilchrist said.
"He is now able to talk and respond to treatment.
"He has responded extraordinarily well since coming out of the coma to the point where his family feels it's like some sort of miracle."
Martyn is set to be moved out of intensive care at Gold Coast University Hospital.
A who's who of cricket greats have over the past week posted messages of support, including former England skipper Michael Vaughan and Indian legends Ravichandran Ashwin and VVS Laxman.
Known as one of the game's great strokemakers, Martyn became a key figure in Steve Waugh's all-powerful Australian side, hitting 13 centuries and averaging 46.37.
He was also part of the Australia team that won the 2003 ODI World Cup, cracking 88 not out in the final against India in a match-winning partnership with Ricky Ponting.
Martyn retired in 2006 during the Ashes series and had kept a low profile since.

Former Pakistan head coach Jason Gillespie recalls being blindsided by PCB decisions, Tim Nielsen&rsquo;s sacking, and ongoing financial disputes.

The sacking of Tim Nielsen as high performance red-ball coach was among a number of issues with the PCB which left him &ldquo;completely humiliated&rdquo;, says former Australia great Jason Gillespie, looking back at his short nine-month stint as Pakistan head coach.
In April 2024, the Pakistan Cricket Board had appointed Gillespie as the head coach in red-ball cricket and former South African batter Gary Kirsten was roped in for a similar role in white-ball formats.
However, Kirsten&rsquo;s resignation in October later that year followed Gillespie&rsquo;s in December, when Nielsen was communicated by the PCB that his services would not be needed before the tour of South Africa 2024-25.
A former head coach of the Australian team, Nielsen was appointed as the high performance red-ball coach in August 2024.
"I was coaching the Pakistan Test side. The PCB sacked our senior assistant coach with ZERO communication with me about it&mdash; as Head Coach I found this situation completely unacceptable,&rdquo; Gillespie wrote on 'X' when asked by a user why he had left his role with the Pakistan Test team.
"There were a number of other issues which left me completely humiliated," he added.
Nielsen&rsquo;s axing, before Pakistan&rsquo;s tour of South Africa, was perhaps the final blow to a rapidly disintegrating relationship between Gillespie and the PCB, which ended with him refusing to board the flight from Adelaide to South Africa and eventually resigning.
In between his resignation and the exit of Kirsten, Gillespie had also served as the interim white-ball coach. Gillespie was succeeded by former Pakistan cricketer Aaqib Javed across formats, who was also serving on the selection panel.
While he was with the Pakistan team, Gillespie felt he was &ldquo;completely and utterly blindsided&rdquo; by the PCB. He told ABC Sport, "There were certainly challenges. I went into the job eyes wide open, I want to make that really clear. I knew that, you know, Pakistan had cycled through a number of coaches in a pretty short space of time."
"The straw that broke the camel's back, I suppose, was, as a head coach, you like to have clear communication with your employer. I was completely and utterly blindsided by a decision to not have a high-performance coach. Tim Nielsen was told that his services were no longer required and I had absolutely zero communication from anyone about that.&rdquo;
"And I just thought after a number of other things that had gone on in the previous few months, that was probably the moment where I thought, 'Well, I'm not really sure if they actually want me to do this job or not&rsquo;."
Gillespie even said he felt his job was reduced to giving players catching practice before a match.
&ldquo;I felt I was basically hitting catches and that was about it on the morning of a game,&rdquo; he said.
"You want to be able to have clear communication with all stakeholders, with selectors, for instance, knowing what the team is as head coach well before the game, or before at least the day before the game,&rdquo; Gillespie added.
According to ESPNCricinfo, Gillespie and PCB are now engaged in a financial dispute with the former coach claiming he was not paid his dues while the board claims he did not provide them with a four-month notice period as per their contract.

Usman Khawaja said Friday he will retire from international cricket after the fifth and final Ashes clash against England, leaving a legacy as Australia's first Muslim Test cricketer while lashing out at perceived "racial stereotyping" during his 15-year career.
The 39-year-old will pad up for the last time, should he be selected, when the Test gets under way in Sydney on Sunday, ending months of speculation about his future.
It would be an 88th Test for the classy left-hander, culminating a career where it began after making his debut at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 2011, also against England.
"The number one emotion is contentment. I'm very lucky to have played so many games for Australia the way I have," Khawaja said. "I hope I have inspired people along the way.
"I'm a proud Muslim coloured boy from Pakistan who was told that he would never play for the Australian cricket team. Look at me now, and you can do the same," he added.
Khawaja immigrated to Australia from Islamabad as a child, battling the odds to become the country's first Pakistan-born, and first Muslim, national player.
At one point, he was the only Asian first-class player in Australia and is credited as a role model who opened doors for others.
"Usman has made a huge contribution to Australian cricket both through his outstanding achievements as one of our most stylish and resilient batters since his Test debut 15 years ago, and off field, particularly through the Usman Khawaja Foundation," said Cricket Australia chief Todd Greenberg.
"On behalf of Australian cricket I would like to thank and congratulate Usman for all he has achieved."
Khawaja's foundation helps youths from refugee, immigrant, Indigenous, and poor socioeconomic backgrounds through introductory cricket programs and educational support.
 -- 'Attacked me' --
Khawaja, a qualified pilot, has plundered 6,206 runs in Test cricket with 16 centuries, averaging 43.39.
He smashed a career-high 232 against Sri Lanka a year ago, but has not made three figures since.
The current Ashes series has been a rollercoaster ride, with the veteran batsman coming under scrutiny.
He injured his back in the first Test in Perth and was replaced as opener in the second innings by Travis Head who blasted a match-winning century.
Khawaja did not feature in the next match at Brisbane and was omitted from the team for the third Test in Adelaide, only to get a lifeline when Steve Smith dropped out ill just before the toss.
He came in at number four and hit 82 and 40 before making 29 and 0 in the fourth Test at Melbourne.
"I'm glad I get to leave on amy own terms, with a little bit of dignity, and go out at the SCG where I love," he said, while expressing frustration at how he was treated.
"When I did my back (in Perth), I hurt my back and had back spasms and it was something I couldn't control.
"The way the media and past players came out and attacked me. I could have copped it for a couple of days but it went on for five days.
"The way everyone came out at me about my preparation, 'he's not committed to the team. Only worried about himself. Playing a golf competition. He's selfish, he didn't train hard enough. He's lazy'.
"These are the same racial stereotypes (I thought we had moved past).
"But obviously we haven't fully moved past that. I haven't seen anyone treated like that in the Australian cricket team before."
He nevertheless admitted the writing was on the wall during the current Ashes series.
"Going into Adelaide and then not being picked initially for that game was probably a sign for me to say 'all right, it's time to move on'," he said.
Khawaja also played 40 one-dayers and nine Twenty20 internationals.
