Caroline Weir Scores Late Equalizer for Real Madrid

Madrid, Nov 12 (AP) Caroline Weir delivered a thrilling last-minute equalizer for Real Madrid, securing a 1-1 draw against Paris FC in the Women's Champions League. Meanwhile, Lyon showcased their dominance with a 3-1 victory over Wolfsburg.

Weir's decisive goal came in the eighth minute of stoppage time, beyond the initially allocated six minutes, as Paris FC attempted to defend their advantage after Lorena Azzaro's first-half penalty.

The French team had previously defeated Real Madrid 1-0 with a penalty in 2023, achieving back-to-back wins over the Spanish club.

In other matches, Norway's Ada Hegerberg starred with two goals in Lyon's win. Chelsea players Catarina Macario and Sam Kerr also scored two goals each in their 6-0 thrashing of tournament newcomer St. Pölten. Wieke Kaptein and an own goal by Lisa Ebert completed the scoring in Austria.

Earlier, Valerenga claimed their first win in the competition by defeating Roma 1-0.

Madrid's Frustration

Real Madrid dominated the first 30 minutes, with Linda Caicedo hitting the crossbar and Mylène Chavas making crucial saves, including one from Naomie Feller. However, Filippa Angeldahl's foul on substitute Sheika Scott led to Azzaro's penalty in the 41st minute.

The Spanish team's frustration grew in the second half as they failed to break through despite mounting pressure. Caicedo's effort was denied again by Chavas, who continued to guard the net effectively.

Goalkeeper Misa Rodríguez received a booking after disputing a referee's decision. Ultimately, Weir managed to find a way past Chavas in the closing moments.

"We had a decent performance, but the finishing was lacking," said Scotland international Weir to ESPN.

Lyon's Commanding Win

Hegerberg scored twice within five minutes in the first half, and captain Wendie Renard added another from the penalty spot, as Lyon overpowered Wolfsburg from start to finish in their 11th meeting. Lineth Beerensteyn scored the German side's consolation goal.

This result marked Lyon's seventh consecutive victory against Wolfsburg. Renard, who has participated in all prior encounters, became the first player to achieve 100 wins in UEFA club competitions. Hegerberg extended her leading tally to 69 goals as the competition's top scorer.

Valerenga's Historic Triumph

Stine Brekken's goal secured an unprecedented win for Valerenga in Rome. Though Roma started stronger, Valerenga grew more confident, with Sara Hørte's deflected header hitting the post in the 34th minute.

Six minutes later, 20-year-old midfielder Brekken skillfully maneuvered past defenders to score from outside the box, comfortably placing the ball in the top left corner.

"We've been striving to improve and score points in the Champions League. Securing this win is immensely gratifying for the team," Brekken said. (AP)
