Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran spearheaded a stunning onslaught as the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) steamrolled the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to amass 238/3 in an IPL clash on Tuesday.
Despite facing sweltering conditions with a real feel of 40°C, LSG's top-order produced a commanding display at the crease. Openers Aiden Markram and Marsh laid a solid foundation, racking up 99 runs in just 62 balls after being asked to bat first. Markram, who contributed a brisk 47 off 28 deliveries, initially led the charge, dispatching Spencer Johnson for 18 runs in his second over, including two fours and a six in succession.
Marsh, maintaining his fine form, blasted 81 off 48 balls and struck six fours and five sixes. He seamlessly worked the gaps and complemented Markram's aggression until Harshit Rana's off-cutter dismantled Markram’s stumps in the 11th over.
Nicholas Pooran took center stage with an explosive unbeaten 87 off just 36 balls, featuring seven boundaries and eight sixes. Pooran's fireworks helped LSG accumulate a whopping 143 runs in the final 10 overs. The left-hander adroitly targeted the short leg-side boundary and quickly regained the Orange Cap from Marsh during his onslaught.
Though KKR initially opted for Varun Chakravarthy as a potential deterrent, his efforts fell short as LSG’s batters remained relentless. Marsh and Pooran combined for a 71-run stand off just 30 balls before Marsh fell to Rana after reaching his fifty in 36 balls.
KKR's bowling unit struggled on their typically slow and dry surface. Varun was economical at first, but his fourth over, which cost 16 runs, epitomized KKR's larger defensive woes. Spencer Johnson went for 46 runs in three overs, while Sunil Narine was also costly, giving away 33 in his spell. Andre Russell, employed surprisingly late in the 16th over, was unable to stem the tide, as by that stage, LSG had already amassed 170.
Vaibhav Arora emerged as KKR’s most commendable bowler, surrendering only 35 runs in his full quota, but lacked the crucial support required to curb LSG's rampage.
LSG's comprehensive performance left KKR searching for answers on a day when their preferred pitch conditions offered no relief.
