Gavaskar names key player for India’s Champions Trophy victory

India is gearing up to kick off their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign on February 20 against Bangladesh in Dubai. With two titles already under their belt, Rohit Sharma and his team are eyeing a record third victory, aiming to add to their ICC trophy collection following their T20 World Cup 2024 win. A standout performance from Virat Kohli will be crucial as he looks to overcome his current dip in form. However, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has pointed to another key player whose performance will be instrumental for India.

Rohit Sharma marked a triumphant return to form in the second ODI against England, where he scored a stellar 119 off 90 balls, securing his 32nd ODI century. Gavaskar has emphasized that Rohit's batting prowess will be critical for India's success in claiming the Champions Trophy 2025. He believes that when the captain performs well, it positively impacts decision-making under pressure.

"Rohit is arguably the most formidable opening batsman in one-day cricket. His form is essential for India's bid to reclaim the Trophy last won in 2013. Few players have multiple double-centuries in this format, and Rohit is among them," Gavaskar expressed in his column for Sportstar. "A captain in form can make better decisions when faced with high-pressure situations."

Kohli's determination to shine remains, according to Gavaskar. The high stakes of the Champions Trophy 2025 present an ideal motivation for Kohli to break through his rough patch. Gavaskar hinted at the possibility of another memorable celebration from Kohli if he leads India to victory, recalling his "Gangnam Style" dance following the 2013 triumph.

"Kohli thrives on big-match occasions; nothing will drive him more than the chance to score runs and secure the Champions Trophy for India. If he leads India to victory this time, we might witness another unique celebration," Gavaskar noted.
