Gillespie blasts Gavaskar for 'absolute nonsense' talk

Pakistan's Champions Trophy 2025 performance draws criticism from Sunil Gavaskar, countered by Jason Gillespie's defense of the team's potential.

Gillespie blasts Gavaskar for 'absolute nonsense' talk

The recent struggles of the Pakistan cricket team have become a hot topic, with many offering their theories and explanations. Under Mohammad Rizwan's leadership, the team failed to secure a single victory in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, despite being the tournament hosts, resulting in an early exit from the group stage.

This performance led Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar to suggest that even India's B team could defeat the current Pakistan squad. However, former head coach Jason Gillespie, who was dismissed prior to the tournament, disagrees with Gavaskar's assessment.

Gillespie described Gavaskar's comments as "absolute nonsense" and encouraged Pakistan to maintain faith in the right players, granting them the time needed to grow and advance the team.

"I don't buy this rhetoric. I saw some comments from Sunil Gavaskar about the Indian B team or Indian C team would beat the Pakistan top team. That's nonsense. Absolute nonsense. If Pakistan pick and stick with the right players and give them time to shine and, time to learn and develop their games, they can beat anyone. I've got no doubt about that," Gillespie stated.

Gavaskar had previously claimed that while India's B team could certainly challenge Pakistan, he was less confident about the C team's chances.

"I think a B team (from India) certainly (can give Pakistan a run for their money). C team, I am not too sure. But a B team will be very, very hard to beat for Pakistan in their current form," Gavaskar commented during a discussion on Sports Today.

In recent years, the Pakistan cricket team has gone through significant changes, including shifts in captaincy, the selection committee, and even the board itself. More changes are anticipated as a reflexive reaction to their inability to reach the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy.
