1000th career game, 789th goal! Lionel Messi, Argentina's star stepped up once again to keep his nation afloat for another FIFA World Cup trophy. La Albiceleste handed a meek Australia a 2-1 loss to charge into the quarterfinals of the 2022 edition of the tournament at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.

The PSG star in his 5th World Cup appearance spearheaded the challenge by breaking the deadlock in the 35th min. Julian Alvarez then doubled the lead with a goal in the 57th minute, setting Argentina up with the Netherlands for the quarterfinal clash. An own goal by Enzo Fernandez though gave the Aussies a glimmer of hope, they eventually faced a 2-1 loss.
