New Delhi, Oct 9 (PTI): India's T20 skipper, Suryakumar Yadav, highlighted the crucial role of overcoming the fear of failure in knockout matches as a cornerstone of the national team's remarkable achievements over the last 15 months.

Over this period, India has clinched two ICC titles and the Asia Cup, since their T20 World Cup victory in June 2024. Notably, India won the Champions Trophy in the ODI format in February. Last month, Suryakumar led India to another Asia Cup triumph in the T20 format.

The dynamic batsman emphasized that playing an aggressive style of cricket has brought substantial rewards.

"In the past year and a half, when we began winning championships, we started approaching the game differently," remarked Suryakumar at a 'Skyscanner' event. "In knockout scenarios, we focused on shedding the fear of failure, concentrating instead on executing our strengths and not dwelling on the outcomes."

India's victory in Barbados in June 2024 marked a significant milestone, ending a decade-long gap without an ICC event win. Suryakumar attributed this success to a mental shift.

"That's the mindset and culture we've cultivated within the team. Cricket has been around for ages, but post-2022, after returning from the T20 World Cup in Australia, we realized a new approach was needed for championship wins," explained the Indian captain.

Suryakumar also acknowledged the mentorship received from Rohit Sharma, crediting him with imparting vital leadership skills.

"Rohit has been like a brother to me. Our bond extends back to my first-class debut for Bombay in 2010-2011, and further through the IPL with Mumbai Indians. My understanding of leadership was greatly enhanced under him," recounted Suryakumar.

Reflecting on Rohit Sharma's captaincy, he added, "When he captained India in T20 and ODIs, it was an opportunity to witness his calm under pressure."
