Supreme Court to hear BCCI's plea regarding cooling off clause

The Indian cricket board had filed the petition 2 years ago regarding the delinking of the state cricket association and BCCI.

The Supreme Court of India, on Friday, agreed to hear BCCI's plea regarding changes in the board's constitution next week.

The BCCI is seeking changes in the provisions of the cooling-off period for the office bearers. As per the rules, any official can hold office for only 2 consecutive terms or 6 years post which they will have to serve a cooling-off period of 3 years. This is irrespective of their term at a state cricket association or BCCI.

The Indian cricket board had filed the petition 2 years ago regarding the delinking of the state cricket association and BCCI. However, due to Covid-19, the issue could not be listed.

This is important for BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and BCCI secretary Jay Shah whose terms are approaching an end, later this year. Both the officials, in September would have completed 6 years in their respective state offices and BCCI.

While Ganguly had served his term at the Cricket Association of Bengal, Shah was employed at the Gujarat Cricket Association. If BCCI's plea is upheld, the two can remain in office for the next 3 years as well.
