BCCI retires MS Dhoni's iconic number 7 jersey; not to be donned by any Indian cricketer

3 years after MS Dhoni retired from international cricket, the BCCI decided to retire his number 7 jersey. No Indian cricketer will don the same number ever again.

'The young players and current Indian team players have been told not to pick MS Dhoni’s Number 7 jersey. The BCCI has decided to retire Dhoni’s T-shirt for his contribution to the game. A new player can’t get No. 7, and No. 10 was already off the list of available numbers,' a senior Board official told the Indian Express.

Number 7 has become synonymous with Dhoni and the decision to retire it was taken as a tribute to the legendary former India captain.

There has been a number crunch in Team India. Though the BCCI allows the players to pick any number between 1 and 100, but there aren't much numbers to choose from currently.

'At present, 60-odd numbers are designated to the regulars in the Indian team and those in contention. So even if a player is out of the team for about a year or so, we don’t give away his number to a new player. That means a recent debutant has just 30-odd numbers to choose from,' the source added.
