India has the second largest population of elderly citizens in the world, who constitute the fastest-growing segment of the population, expected to reach about 19% of the population in 2050. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought the gaps in India’s health policy, programme implementation, infrastructure and support systems for the elderly, who have been most vulnerable to the virus, out in the open. We spoke with A.B. Dey, professor of medicine and head, geriatric division at AIIMS, Delhi, for the medical perspective and to Saumyajit Roy of Emoha ElderCare on the corporate response to addressing the gaps in eldercare.
