Editorji Exclusive: Tips to prevent dehydration during summer

Summer is here! No matter how much we avoid going out in the sun, we will lose some fluids through sweat. Excessive sweating and extreme physical activity in hot and humid weather put us at risk of dehydration.

Feeling thirsty, tired, dizzy or lightheaded are signs you need to watch out for. Having dry lips, eyes, skin and mouth, urinating less than four times a day, and experiencing muscle cramps are symptoms of dehydration.

Here are some ways to prevent dehydration this summer:

Sip water throughout the day

Drink more water than usual when the weather gets hot, especially if you are active throughout the day. If the water tastes boring to you, flavour it. Infuse it with citrus fruits, spices and condiments to make hydration fun for you.

Add seeds to your water

Sweet basil and chia seeds absorb four times their dry weight in water and provide minerals like calcium, magnesium, zinc, and vitamins. Add these tiny seeds to your water or smoothies and stay hydrated for a longer time.

Choose natural beverages

Coconut water, buttermilk, and lemon water are always better choices to hydrate and nourish your body than packaged, sugar-loaded, carbonated beverages.

Consume seasonal fruits and veggies

Fruits and veggies contain a lot of water along with a whole bunch of nutrients that benefit us. Consume veggies with a higher water content like cucumber, zucchini, lettuce, and tomatoes. High water content fruits include oranges, pineapple, watermelon and muskmelon.

A proper hydration strategy will help you perform your best and prevent cramping or heat strokes.
