D-Day for Mamata Didi as Bhabanipur votes today

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is seeking election from Bhabanipur to enter the Assembly before the end of her six-month period of Chief Ministership-without-being-an-MLA. The result will be declared on October 3.

All eyes are on South Kolkata's Bhabanipur constituency as it votes today in a crucial by-election.

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is seeking election from the seat to enter the Assembly before the end of her six-month period of Chief Ministership-without-being-an-MLA. The result will be declared on October 3.

Despite her party's thumping win in elections earlier this year, Mamata Banerjee lost to BJP's Suvendu Adhikari from Nandigram in a tough contest.

Her party MLA Subrata Bakshi vacated the Bhabanipur seat to make way for the CM, who has earlier represented the seat and has her home in the constituency.

The BJP has put up 41-year-old Priyanka Tibrewal as a candidate against its arch-rival. Although she lost the recent Assembly polls and also the 2015 municipal polls, the Calcutta High Court lawyer has turned high profile, being one of the petitioners in the post-poll violence case against the state government.

Given the high-stakes contest, strict security measures are in place to ensure smooth voting. Up to 35 companies of Central paramilitary forces have been deployed, with three personnel to be present at each of the 270-odd booths all of which have been declared sensitive.

Besides Bhabanipur, polls are also happening in Shamsherganj and Jangipur in Murshidabad district.
