PM Modi, Ukraine President discuss Russia war after India abstains from UNSC resolution vote

The conversation took place hours after India abstained from voting on a resolution at the United Nations Security Council which condemned Russia's actions.

Two days after Russia launched a military operation against Ukraine, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The conversation took place hours after India abstained from voting on a resolution at the United Nations Security Council which condemned Russia's actions. The resolution was not passed as permanent member Russia vetoed it.

Ukraine President Zelenskyy tweeted that he briefed PM Modi about the situation, and that over 1 lakh invaders were on Ukrainian soil. Zelenskyy also urged PM Modi to provide Ukraine support in the UN Security Council to "stop the aggressor together".

The Indian Prime Minister expressed "deep anguish about the loss of life and property due to the ongoing conflict", as per a government press release. Modi reiterated his call for an immediate cessation of violence and a return to dialogue, and expressed India’s willingness to contribute in any way towards peace efforts.

The Prime Minister also conveyed India's concern for the safety and security of Indian citizens, including students, present in Ukraine. He sought facilitation by Ukrainian authorities to expeditiously and safely evacuate Indian citizens.

On February 24, the day that the war broke out, PM Modi had spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin and urged "immediate cessation of violence".
