Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi approved a proposal for the daily wage hike on Tuesday, he said, adding that the decision will benefit lakhs of workers.
The minimum daily wage for unskilled workers has been increased from Rs 452 to Rs 462, and from Rs 502 to Rs 512 for semi-skilled workers. Skilled workers will get Rs 562, instead of Rs 552, and the minimum wage for highly-skilled labourers will be Rs 612 from Rs 602 earlier.
The revision will be effective retrospectively from April 1, a CMO release said.

Seven people were killed when a rain-soaked wall collapsed at the Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple in Simhachalam here in the early hours of Wednesday, turning an annual ritual at the famous north Andhra shrine into a scene of both grandeur and grief.
The government said seven people died after the wall collapsed on the Rs 300 ticket queue line near the shopping complex on the ghat road from Simhagiri bus stand at around 3 am.
President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, among others, expressed grief over the incident. Both the Centre and the state government announced ex-gratia to the families of those killed in the incident.
State Home Minister V Anitha, who was present at the site, said preliminary reports indicated that the wall collapse at the temple was triggered by soil loosening due to heavy rains in the area. According to government sources, one person sustained injuries.
CM Naidu expressed deep sorrow and said he had spoken to the Collector and SP and directed for treatment be provided to the injured.
"Deeply saddened by the death of seven devotees at Simhachalam....my condolences to the families. I'm closely monitoring the situation and have ordered continuous review and support for victims," said Naidu in a post on 'X'.
The CM, who reviewed the situation via teleconference, announced an ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakh each to the kin of the deceased and Rs 3 lakh each to the injured, an official release said. An outsourcing job in temples under the Endowments Department will be provided to a family member of each victim.
Naidu also ordered an inquiry into the incident by a three-member committee.
The committee members are-- Irrigation chief engineer Venkateswar Rao, Municipal Administration principal secretary S Suresh Kumar and senior IPS officer Ake Ravi Krishna.
Naidu also reviewed the incident at his Undavalli residence with DGP Harish Kumar Gupta and other senior officials. They apprised the CM of the help being extended to the victims.
In her condolence message on "X', President Murmu said: "Saddened by the loss of lives including those of women in a wall collapse incident in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. My thoughts and prayers are with the grieving families." "May the injured recover soon," she said.
PM Modi mourned the victims. "Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the collapse of a wall in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon." He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.
Telangana CM A Revanth Reddy also condoled the deaths.
Earlier, the annual Chandanotsavam at the temple witnessed both grandeur and grief, as thousands gathered to witness the Nijaroopa darshanam of the Lord, even as tragedy struck in the form of the wall collapse.
The shrine is dedicated to Lord Narasimha Swamy, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The deity's idol is covered with sandalwood all through the year and revealed only once a year which is celebrated as Chandanotsavam.
Home Minister Anitha said heavy overnight rains and strong winds are suspected to have loosened the soil, causing the wall to give away.
Anitha, present at the temple during the incident, visited the site immediately. There was no negligence in the rescue response, she asserted.
An official from the temple said that the cause appears to be structural failure triggered by rains, but a detailed probe is underway.
Endowments Minister Ramanarayana Reddy called the tragedy unfortunate and announced stronger safety protocols.
Rescue operations are underway, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and state authorities pressed into service.
According to State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel, eight devotees were trapped under the debris, and seven bodies--three women and four men were extricated during the rescue operation.
Former CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed shock over the incident and urged for best medical support to the injured and compensation to the victims' families.
According to a YSRCP statement, Reddy will visit Visakhapatnam later on Wednesday to meet with the families of the deceased.
Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan expressed sorrow over the death of the devotees, adding that the disaster striking during Chandanaostavam is unfortunate.
Earlier this year, six devotees waiting to collect tokens for Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam at Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple on Tirumala Hills in Tirupati were killed in a stampede.

Following a complaint by the victim's brother, Naeem, a named FIR was registered against Mehrban and Umar. Acting on a tip-off, police attempted to stop the duo late Tuesday night near Aman Colony.
The two opened fire, prompting retaliatory action in which Mehrban was shot in the leg and apprehended along with Umar, he said.
Police recovered two country-made pistols, the motorcycle used in the crime, and the victim's mobile phone.
During questioning, Mehrban confessed to having a five-year-long relationship with his aunt Amreen.
When he found out about the affair, Farooq allegedly began abusing his wife. So they formed a plan to kill him, police said.
ASP Vajpayee added that further action, including interrogation of the victim's wife, is underway.

In preparation for the pilgrimage, Uttarakhand Director General of Police Deepam Seth on Tuesday said that all security and logistical arrangements were in place.
He informed that around 6,000 policemen along with 17 Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) companies would be deployed for smooth and safe conduct of the Yatra. Drone surveillance will also be used to monitor the pilgrim routes and ensure crowd control.
Meanwhile, the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) has intensified its preparations for the next phase of the pilgrimage.
The doors of Shri Kedarnath Dham are scheduled to open on May 2, followed by Shri Badrinath Dham on May 4. Shri Madmaheshwar temple, the second Kedar, will open on May 21, and Shri Tungnath, the third Kedar, will open on May 2.
Elsewhere in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, lakhs of devotees gathered in Vrindavan on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya for a rare glimpse of Lord Banke Bihari&rsquo;s feet &mdash; an annual event that draws pilgrims from far and wide.
Senior administrative and police officials, including DIG Shailesh Pandey, District Magistrate Chandraprakash, and SSP Shlok Kumar, reviewed crowd management and security measures in the temple area.

According to cane industry data updated until April 15, Maharashtra, which produced 110.20 lakh metric tons (LMT) of sugar in the 2023-24 season, saw a dramatic decline in 2024-25, producing only 80.70 LMT&mdash;down by more than 26%.
In contrast, UP's sugar production fell by 11.7%, dropping from 103.65 LMT in 2023-24 to 91.50 LMT in 2024-25, a significantly smaller dip compared to other states. Karnataka, another key producer, also saw a sharp decline, with sugar production dropping from 53 LMT in 2023-24 to 42 LMT this season, a decrease of around 21%. On a national level, India&rsquo;s sugar production fell from 319 LMT in 2023-24 to 299 LMT in 2024-25, a drop of about 19%. This decline has been primarily attributed to adverse weather conditions, including droughts and excessive rainfall, which have severely impacted sugarcane yields in major producing states.
UP&rsquo;s success in maintaining its production levels was largely due to its continued operation of sugar mills. While Maharashtra had only one sugar mill running by mid-April, UP operated 22 sugar mills, which accounted for about 60% of the 37 mills operating nationwide. Tamil Nadu, which operates 10 mills, also saw a decrease in sugar production, from 10.75 LMT in 2023-24 to 7 LMT this year.
UP crushed over 937 LMT of sugarcane this season, slightly down from 959 LMT in the previous year. Meanwhile, Maharashtra&rsquo;s cane crushing dropped from 1,064 LMT in 2023-24 to 848 LMT in 2024-25. Similarly, Karnataka experienced a fall in cane crushing, from 527 LMT to 475 LMT.
The reduced sugar output has led to a slowdown in sugar exports. Indian mills have contracted to export 600,000 metric tons of sugar for the 2024-25 marketing year, but experts have noted a decline in export pace, citing rising domestic prices and increased local demand.&nbsp;
The anticipated shortfall in production is also expected to affect global sugar prices, given India&rsquo;s significant role as a major sugar exporter.
This situation highlights the ongoing challenges posed by climatic factors, underscoring their impact on agricultural productivity and the broader economy.

A recent survey commissioned by the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture has revealed that a single pilgrim attending the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh spent an estimated Rs 5,877.63 during the event.&nbsp;
The survey, which analyzed spending patterns, found that 41.11% of expenses were allocated to travel, 16.64% to accommodation, 11.24% to food, 11.08% to religious items, 2.13% to entertainment, 7.42% to shopping, and 10.38% to other miscellaneous expenses.
Given the massive footfall of 66 crore pilgrims at the Maha Kumbh, this translates into an estimated total economic impact of Rs 3.88 lakh crore. Reacting to these findings, Thakur Jaiveer Singh, the Minister for Tourism and Culture, stated: "It is evident that the Maha Kumbh contributed immensely to the state's economy."
The &lsquo;Maha Kumbh Spiritual Survey&ndash;2025&rsquo; was conducted from January 28 to February 26, 2025, across various locations in Prayagraj, including Teliarganj, Jhunsi, Arail, and Parade Ground. The survey interviewed 3,52,388 pilgrims from around the world, with 1,093 respondents coming from international locations such as the USA, UK, Canada, Nepal, Australia, and Fiji. The survey was led by Deloitte, with support from the All India Institute of Local Self Government (AIILSG).
One of the key findings of the survey was that the spiritual trio of Prayagraj, Ayodhya, and Varanasi emerged as the top tourist destinations for both domestic and international pilgrims.&nbsp;
"It was interesting to note that among previous visits, 27.32% of respondents last visited Ayodhya, 22.68% visited Sangam in Prayagraj, and 8.81% visited Varanasi. Also, for future visits, 32.57% preferred Sangam, 12.46% Ayodhya, and 7.46% Varanasi. In terms of overall favourite destinations, 22.55% chose Ayodhya, 19.96% chose Sangam, and 12.72% chose Varanasi," the officials revealed.
Additionally, the survey explored the travel preferences of visitors, showing a notable difference between domestic and international tourists. While domestic visitors tended to travel with family, foreign tourists favored solo travel. The findings revealed that 40% of Indian tourists visited with family, 30.88% alone, and 29.13% with friends. Among foreign tourists, 55.26% traveled alone, 24.43% with family, and 20.31% with friends.
Tourism Principal Secretary Mukesh Meshram commented, "The findings would be studied in detail by departmental experts, and the learnings from it would be tweaked in future planning."

Over the past seven days, the image of a woman, Himanshi Narwal, wearing bridal bangles and locked in silent despair as she sits beside her dead husband, Navy officer Vinay Narwal&mdash;murdered in a ghastly terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam&mdash;has shaken the country to its core. The picture does speak, indeed. But it does not always tell the entire story. The responsibility lies with the viewers, who have to identify those overlooked aspects within the image. Now, the way we see things is affected by what we know or what we believe. Although the relation between what we see and what we know is never fully resolved. We only see what we look at. To look is an act of choice. As a result of this choice, what is seen is metaphorically brought within our reach.
Every image conveys a distinct viewpoint. How we want to see the different aspects of the image depends on our individual perspectives. Images are, to a vast degree, more precise and richer than literature, since no other text from the past can offer direct testimony about the world that surrounded other people at other times. The same goes with photographs. It becomes a medium through which the photographers want us to see their interpretation of the visible. That is where the requirement of our approach enters. When we 'see' a landscape, we subconsciously situate ourselves in it. It also opens the door to revisiting or reimagining other landscapes that we are not seeing. Similarly, as we continue to observe that particular photograph of Pahalgam, numerous instances begin to surface in our minds.
We remember witnessing three-year-old Aylan Kurdi lying dead on a Turkish beach, which shook the world. We remember the ongoing war between Israel and Palestine in Gaza&mdash;its loss, its terror, its devastation, and its people carrying the burden of never-ending misery. We remember Ukraine. Some might trace back to finding the memories of barbarism to Hitler's infamous Auschwitz. At this point, it suddenly becomes apparent that what lies before us is not merely a picture but a portrait. The truth of that portrait lies in the heart of eternity, which shows a disturbing illustration of human suffering that spans across different times and places.&nbsp;
We are affected by the charm of nature diversely and sometimes in the ways we least anticipate. It forms its thought in a realm detached from concrete reality. Without characters, without situations. The fascinating aspect of nature's magnificence is that it consistently allows you to immerse yourself deeply through your reasoning mind and creative imagination. Although I have never been to' Pahalgam' (which in Kashmiri signifies 'village of shepherds'), if I close my eyes and start dreaming about the place, I feel that I would never regret it if the rest of the world disappeared from my eyes forever! The same might be the case with almost every citizen of this country! No matter how many times we go there or even if we never do, a portion of the valley still remains within. Such is the influence Kashmir has on us.
Let us return to the image where it all began. The image that depicts the true form of the vast emptiness of life. Grief comes to us naturally. We grieve because we feel connected. We grieve because we have been loved. And because, in grieving, we find a way to honor what once made life whole. As we continue to look, it becomes clearer that the image is uncovering more than despair at the loss. It holds the raw truth of humanity, along with the profound portrayal of empathy and love.
This single photograph creates a faint, sacred space. That space is precisely unmarred by the violence, hatred, ethnic venom, and political cruelty of our mundane existence. And, in that very moment, it appears to embody the unfathomable depths of pain of the whole nation. We may have the luxury of distance from Kashmir. We may have the luxury of distance from this image as well. Yet, the greenness of that grief covers us fully. In that utter silence, we are all revealed.
Seven days have passed since the attack. More afternoons, more nights, more evenings&mdash; perhaps for another seven lives, this image may still be recognizable in our minds. We will remember, we will remember in countless repetitions, the sight that surfaced at nearly 2,800 meters above sea level, which silently reminded us once again how sorrow stands like a rock in the midst of various disputes. It reminded us how love keeps watch beside envy and hatred. All these emotions were packed in that single image (that effectively captured the wounded hearts of the valley of pristine whiteness). A single image that, despite being just a 'picture,' appeared to completely disregard the common saying that 'a picture speaks a thousand words' and, on that day, in fact 'could not speak.'

Highlighting ongoing progress, the Chief Minister noted that several new infrastructural initiatives are advancing swiftly across the region.
In a separate address in Deoria district, where he laid the foundation for various development projects, CM Yogi launched a scathing attack on the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress over their reactions to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. He accused both parties of divisive politics and alleged they were indirectly supporting Pakistan by deflecting blame.
Condemning the statements made by SP leaders, Adityanath referenced their refusal to meet the family of Shubham Dwivedi, a Kanpur resident killed in the attack. He said, &ldquo;You have seen that after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, it is hard to understand whether the statements are from an SP leader or a Pakistani spokesperson... When a reporter asked an SP leader why he hadn't gone to pay respects to the victim, Shubham Dwivedi, he said he wasn't a member of the party.&rdquo; He added, &ldquo;The country has come together to condemn the attack, but these SP leaders have made such remarks.&rdquo;
The Chief Minister also criticized another SP leader for stating, &ldquo;Hindu has killed Hindu,&rdquo; asserting that such comments effectively exonerated Pakistan. He accused the opposition of placing family interests and caste politics above national priorities. &ldquo;The previous government only brought diseases, unemployment by shutting down sugar mills, and riots. These leaders focused on their families. They talk about the development of the caste, but when in power, they only work for their family's benefit,&rdquo; he said.
CM Yogi further charged the Congress and SP with consistently adopting extreme appeasement politics, especially during moments that demand national unity. Calling for a collective stand against terrorism, he said, &ldquo;Whenever divisive politics occurs, the SP and Congress leaders cross all limits of appeasement, just like they are doing now. The whole nation should condemn this incident unanimously. Under the leadership of PM Modi, we must resolve to fight and end terrorism. We need to rise above political differences and think about the country and its people. But we can't expect such behavior from them.&rdquo;
These remarks come as national outrage continues over the Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives. The BJP has ramped up its criticism of the opposition over what it describes as irresponsible commentary on national security issues.
Earlier in the day, CM Yogi inaugurated and laid the foundation for 501 development projects in Deoria, amounting to over ₹676 crore. He also distributed acceptance letters and cheques to beneficiaries of various government welfare schemes.

It said the hike will be implemented retrospectively from January 1, 2025.
Employees will receive the increased DA as cash benefit along with their April salary.
This decision will benefit around 8.5 lakh state government employees and pensioners, the release added.

In a major decision, the Centre on Wednesday announced that caste enumeration will be included in the forthcoming census exercise in a &lsquo;transparent&rsquo; manner.
Opposition parties, including the Congress, have been demanding a nationwide caste census, making it a major election issue, and some states like Bihar, Telangana and Karnataka have conducted such surveys in their states.
Karnataka carried out a &lsquo;social and educational survey&rsquo; covering 94 per cent of the state population. After nine years of the exercise since 2015, the then Backward Class Commission Chairperson Jayaprakash Hegde submitted the report to the chief minister in February 2024.
Amid internal differences over the caste census report, a special meeting of the state cabinet that met on April 17, 2025, to discuss it, ended inconclusive, without any major decision.
Speaking to reporters here, Siddaramaiah said, "We (Congress) had said in our manifesto that a socio-economic and caste census should be conducted. I don&rsquo;t know whether they would do just a caste census or a socio-economic survey as well. I will react after going through it (Centre&rsquo;s decision)." Siddaramaiah said a socio-economic survey was necessary for social justice.
"They (Centre) have said they would do a census and caste census. Socio-economic survey is very important. If we have to do social justice, then socio-economic survey has to be done," he added.
When he was reminded that he faced criticism for tabling the caste census at a cabinet meeting held recently, the chief minister said he had told all the ministers to give their opinion.
"After the ministers submit their opinion in writing, we will present it in the cabinet and discuss the socio-economic survey report," Siddaramaiah added.

You are above all these things. Forgive me for my immodesty; I mostly feel above these trolls, but sometimes you have to come down and tell them that, 'No, you can't take this liberty, and if you do, I'll pay you back in the same coin." The 80-year-old writer, who also serves as the chairperson of the Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS), was speaking on the sidelines of the "IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP" conference organized by FICCI on Tuesday here.
Akhtar, who took over the IPRS in 2017, said the copyright body needs government support so that artists receive their fair share of public performance royalty.
"If there are a few lakh people who are not paying us public performance royalty, we can't have a few lakh cases in courts, it is not possible. It is only the government that can put pressure by making some kind of a rule or a sub-rule to make it mandatory to pay.
"Whenever I have contacted any political party or ministry, they have been extremely sympathetic about the cause. They have respect for Indian artists; they have often gone out of their way to help us. I have no such problems. What we have to do now is to go again (to the authorities) and tell them what is wrong. You have made a fantastic law, but it is not working on the ground," he said.
"Sholay" and "Deewar", which he co-wrote with Salim Khan, are celebrating their 50th release anniversary. Asked what was the reason behind the enduring relevance of these films, the writer said it's impossible to predict how a movie is going to connect with people while writing it.
"Kuch achhe kaam hote hain jo reh jaate hain public memory mein (there are a few good works that remain etched in public memory). And the films you're talking about they have somehow (have stayed in public memory)... Why, I don't know. If I knew, I would've done it again and again. They have become a part of the Indian psyche, culture, and common language.
"Dialogues of a 50-year-old film are being referenced in stand-up comedy, other films, and even in political speeches till today. How and why has it happened? I mean, what is charisma? There is no definition of charisma. It happens, and then you try to reason it out, find some rationale or logic in it. But I think it is beyond it," he added.

The SP has since dissociated itself from the poster, but the controversy has refused to die down, with rival parties demanding an apology from Yadav.
"We won't relent until the SP chief tenders an apology," said BJP cadres who staged a sit-in at the Ambedkar statue at Lucknow's Hazratganj. Similar protests by the BJP were seen in other parts of the state.
The SP hit back at its rivals and suggested that the poster could be the work of the BJP.
When asked about the poster, SP chief spokesperson Rajendra Chowdhary told PTI, "This is not the official poster of the Samajwadi Party... We are not aware of who has put this up. Anyone can put up a poster anywhere. Maybe it's the work of BJP men." "The Samajwadi Party is fighting to save the Constitution of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar and getting a tremendous response from the people," he added.
The SP leadership, buoyed by the party's impressive showing in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls in UP, has been trying to woo the Dalits, once considered loyal to the BSP, and competing with the BJP for support of the OBCs, considered the mainstays of BJP's phenomenal wins in UP since the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the SP, in alliance with Congress, managed to check the BJP's growing dominance in the state and dealt an embarrassing blow when the SP's Dalit leader Awadhesh Prasad defeated his BJP rival from the Faizabad Lok Sabha seat. The constituency is part of Ayodhya, where only a few months back the Ram temple was built under BJP governments in the state and center.
The BJP regained some of its lost momentum when it won the subsequent by-polls in SP bastions of Kundarki, a Muslim-dominated seat, and Katehari, a seat with sizable OBC, Dalit, and minority voters. Yet, the SP has continued to pursue more support from these groups and has opened its doors to many Dalit and OBC leaders who were previously with BSP.
Mayawati on Wednesday named the SP and Congress in a social media post, asking them to refrain from "insulting" Ambedkar, or her party, BSP, would be forced to take to the streets in protest.
On April 12, barely two days before Ambedkar's birth anniversary (April 14), SP chief Yadav unveiled a statue of Ambedkar in Etawah, praising the Dalit icon widely regarded as the architect of the Indian Constitution.
This was a line of attack used by the SP and its ally Congress, which have accused the BJP of attempting to change the Constitution.
The poster controversy has now given the BJP some ammunition to hit back at the SP, the main opposition party in the UP, and its attempts to pitch itself as a party for Dalits.
Asim Arun, the state's Minister for Social Welfare and SC/ST Welfare, described the 'half Ambedkar, half Akhilesh' poster as a "grave insult to Ambedkar". He claimed that the SP has a history of undermining Dalits and backward communities.
"Akhilesh Yadav scrapped many Dalit welfare schemes during his tenure as CM," he claimed.
UP MLC Lalji Prasad Nirmal went further, alleging that Yadav was "anti-Dalit," pointing to the SP government's past decision to ban reservations in promotions for Dalit employees.
Rajya Sabha MP Brij Lal also lashed out, saying, "Akhilesh is not even worthy of being the dust beneath Babasaheb's feet. The people will not forgive this insult." The political exchanges over the Constitution and now the poster are linked to claiming the legacy of Ambedkar, whose image continues to be a potent symbol in Uttar Pradesh's caste-driven political landscape.

The fire completely destroyed the television, and the flames spread to other parts of the house, causing extensive damage.
Upon being informed, residents and fire and rescue personnel rushed to the scene and doused the flames, they said.
Immanuel, Sajin&rsquo;s younger brother, said the incident occurred while both were watching television.
"Suddenly, flames appeared on the switchboard. They spread quickly, and the back of the TV caught fire. As my brother tried to switch off the TV, he suffered burns on his hands. Later, it exploded loudly," he told the media.
Fire and rescue officials said a short circuit is suspected to have caused the explosion.
