The Meghalaya Police on Tuesday secured a three-day transit remand for Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the murder of her husband, Indore resident Raja Raghuvanshi.
Earlier in the day, Sonam was brought to the Phulwari Sharif police station in Bihar’s Patna, as part of the ongoing investigation into the high-profile case.
According to Meghalaya Police, Sonam is the primary suspect in the alleged murder, which took place during the couple’s honeymoon in the northeastern state. Authorities claim that Raja was killed by contract killers reportedly hired by Sonam. She is now being taken to Shillong under police custody.
The transit remand of Sonam follows a similar development on Monday, when Meghalaya Police obtained custody of three other accused in the same case. These individuals — Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Raj Singh Kushwaha — will also be transported to Shillong for further questioning and investigation.
A senior Uttar Pradesh police official revealed that Sonam was apprehended near a dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur main road. After her detention, she was placed at the Sakhi One Stop Centre in Ghazipur. Upon the arrival of Meghalaya Police, Sonam underwent a medical examination at the District Hospital before being moved for legal procedures.
Additional DCP (Crime) Rajesh Dandotiya confirmed the development while speaking to ANI. "They were presented before the CJM Judge, and Shillong police got a 7-day transit remand. The fourth accused, Anand, is being brought to Indore from Sagar, Bina (Madhya Pradesh), and will be produced in court on Tuesday. All four will be taken to Shillong by Shillong Police."
The case has attracted widespread attention, particularly after the arrest of multiple individuals. Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong addressed the media on June 9, confirming that four individuals had been apprehended in connection with the murder.
"They were presented before the CJM Judge, and Shillong police got a 7-day transit remand. The fourth accused, Anand, is being brought to Indore from Sagar, Bina (Madhya Pradesh), and will be produced in court on Tuesday. All four will be taken to Shillong by Shillong Police," he said.
Tynsong also confirmed Sonam’s surrender. "Sonam voluntarily turned herself in, and all those apprehended would be brought to Shillong for further investigation," he added. Authorities are reportedly still searching for one remaining suspect.
Meghalaya Special Investigation Team (SIT) Chief Herbert Pyniaid Kharkongor revealed findings from the post-mortem report, which stated that Raja Raghuvanshi had suffered two head injuries.
Both Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi, residents of Madhya Pradesh’s Indore, had gone missing during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. Raja’s body was later discovered in the state, triggering a multi-state investigation now being led by Meghalaya Police.
Police continue to describe Sonam and her associate Raj as the primary accused in what is being treated as a premeditated murder.
