The US sent its two top intelligence officials to India to press for an investigation into an alleged plot to assassinate a Sikh separatist leader on American soil earlier.
The federal prosecutors have now filed a case against an Indian national, named Nikhil Gupta, in a New York court charging him with 'murder-for-hire'. The US document does not mention the target but according to reports it is Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a separatist Khalistani leader who is both a US and Canadian citizen.
This comes on a day when India said that it has constituted a high-level enquiry committee to probe allegations relating to a conspiracy to kill the Sikh extremist on American soil.
The indictment has not named the US citizen but The Financial Times, citing unnamed sources, last week reported that US authorities thwarted a plot to assassinate banned Sikhs for Justice&rsquo;s Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, and issued a warning to the Indian government over concerns it was involved in the plot.

The United States has charged an Indian man for allegedly being involved in a plot to kill an American citizen in New York. The documents submitted by the US say that the target was a Sikh activist who advocated for a separate state of Khalistan.&nbsp;
US has claimed that an Indian government employee contacted Nikhil Gupta in May 2023 and &lsquo;recruited GUPTA to orchestrate the assassination of the Victim in the United States. &lsquo;
&lsquo;In or about May 2023, CC-1 recruited GUPTA to orchestrate the assassination of the Victim in the United States. &nbsp;The Victim is a vocal critic of the Indian government and leads a U.S.-based organization that advocates for the secession of Punjab, a state in northern India that is home to a large population of Sikhs, an ethnoreligious minority group in India,&rsquo; a press release on the US Justice Department website says.&nbsp;
The document adds that Gupta contacted an individual he believed to be a &lsquo;criminal associate&rsquo; but he was a &lsquo;confidential source&rsquo; working with the American Drug Enforcement Agency. Gupta wanted the associate to help him contract a hitman for the alleged assassination plot.&nbsp;
The associate introduced Gupta to a &lsquo;purported hitman, who was in fact a DEA undercover officer&rsquo;.&nbsp;
The indictment filed by the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York says that the India government employee agreed through Nikhil Gupta to pay the &lsquo;hitman&rsquo; $100,000 for assassination.
&lsquo;In or about June 2023&rsquo;, the Indian govt employee gave Gupta personal information about the target including his number, address and schedule. Gupta then passed the details to the &lsquo;hitman&rsquo;. The US document says Gupta sent the Indian government employee regular surveillance photographs of the target.&nbsp;
US prosecutors have said that Gupta asked the &lsquo;hitman&rsquo;, who was a US undercover agent, to carry out the murder as soon as possible but asked him not to do anything &lsquo;around the time of anticipated engagements scheduled to occur in the ensuing weeks between high-level U.S. and Indian government officials.&rsquo;
On June 20, 2023 &ndash; two days after Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed in Canada &ndash; Gupta sent the &lsquo;hitman&rsquo; a news article on the target and said the assassination was now a priority.&nbsp;

Voting has begun to elect 119 members to the Telangana Legislative Assembly.
Voters would exercise their franchise in 35,655 polling stations set up across the state. There are 3.26 crore eligible voters in the state.
As many as 2,290 contestants are in the fray for the upcoming elections, including Chief Minister K Chandrasekar Rao, his son KT Rama Rao, state Congress president A Revanth Reddy and BJP Lok Sabha members Bandi Sanjay Kumar and D Arvind.
BRS has fielded candidates in all 119 seats. As per the seat-sharing agreement, BJP and actor Pawan Kalyan-headed Jana Sena are contesting in 111 and 8 seats respectively, while Congress has given one seat to its ally CPI, and fighting from 118 others.
Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM has put up candidates in nine segments in the city.

Anju, an Indian mother of two children who travelled to Pakistan to marry her Facebook friend, returned to India through the Wagah-Attari border on Wednesday, officials said.
Anju alias Fatima, 34, had travelled to a remote village in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan to marry her Facebook friend Nasrullah, leaving her children in India.
Her 29-year-old Pakistani husband accompanied her up to the Wagah border.
On reaching India, she was not allowed to interact with the media and straightway went to the airport to catch a flight to Delhi.
At the Shri Guru Ramdas International Airport here, Anju was spotted wearing a burqa.
She told the media there, "I am here in India to meet my Indian family. I came back to India of my own volition...." Anju had travelled to Pakistan via the Wagah-Attari border in July with a visa, converted to Islam, changed her name to Fatima after getting married to Nasrullah, whom she had befriended on Facebook four years ago.
Anju's Indian husband Arvind had said that she left home on the pretext of going to Jaipur but later the family came to know that she was in Pakistan.
Anju, along with her Indian husband, used to live in the Bhiwadi area of Rajasthan.
She hails from Kailor village in Uttar Pradesh.
On Wednesday, Bhiwadi's Additional Superintendent of Police Dilip Saini said they had no information about the return of Anju.
Police sources said that Arvind no longer resides in Bhiwadi and has relocated to somewhere with their children.

A Manipuri boy and girl had gone missing on July 6

The CBI has arrested from Pune a 22-year-old man suspected to be the mastermind behind the case of two missing Manipuri students who were believed to have been killed, officials said Friday.
A special investigation team of the CBI arrested Paolunmang from Pune on Wednesday and took him to Guwahati to be produced before a court, they said.
The special court has sent him to the CBI custody till October 16, they said.
The CBI suspects Paolunmang to be the mastermind in the case, they said.
The central agency arrested two men, Paominlun Haokip and Smalsawm Haokip, and two women, Lhingneichong Baitekuki and Tinneilhing Henthang, on October 1.
Phijam Hemanjit (20) and Hijam Linthoingambi, a girl aged 17 years, had gone missing on July 6. Photos purportedly showing their bodies surfaced on September 25, leading to violent protests, mainly by students.

Home Minister Amit Shah asserted on Wednesday that the Central government will implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and no one can stop it.
Addressing a big rally here to launch the BJP's Lok Sabha campaign, Shah launched a blistering attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the issues of appeasement, infiltration, corruption and political violence, alleging she has "destroyed" the state.
Banerjee has been opposing the CAA due to her support to infiltration, he asserted, adding that a state with so much infiltration cannot develop.
He urged people to throw out her government by electing the BJP in the next assembly polls in 2026 and asked them to lay its foundation by supporting the party in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
He said, "Give so many seats to the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls that Modi ji says I have become PM due to Bengal." The Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress won the last assembly polls by "rigging" but the BJP jumped to 77 seats from zero, he said, calling upon people to end the TMC's alleged misrule of corruption, infiltration, and political violence by electing a government conducive to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's agenda of development.
Lauding the turnout at the rally, he said this indicates the people's mood and claimed that the BJP will come to power with two-thirds majority in the state in 2026.
The BJP's performance in the state in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls will create the foundation of its win in the assembly polls, he said.
Turning to the contentious CAA issue, he said Banerjee has been opposing it but it is a law of the country and no one can stop its implementation, which has been in a limbo as the central government is yet to frame its rules amid the opposition's strong stand against the law.
Parliament had passed the law in 2019 They, Shah said in a reference to the intended beneficiaries of the law, have as much a right to citizenship as anyone else. Banerjee has once stalled Parliament over the issue of infiltration but she is now keeping mum, he said, claiming that no one can infiltrate into Assam after the BJP was voted to power in the state.
"Assam has done a commendable job in stopping infiltration. But in West Bengal, infiltration persists due to the TMC government's vote-bank politics. Mamata Banerjee is opposing CAA, but let me say it clearly that CAA will be implemented in the country. No one can stop the implementation of CAA," Shah declared.
Hitting out at Banerjee over the suspension of the Leader of Opposition in Bengal assembly Suvendu Adhikari, he said she may try to silence him but cannot silence people of the state.
Her time as the state's chief minister is over, he said, often referring to her as 'didi'.
Shah dared Banerjee to suspend from her party some of its leaders arrested in corruption cases and said she cannot do it as she apprehended that they may implicate her nephew, a reference to MP Abhishek Banerjee.
"The people of Bengal are fed up with the cut money and syndicates of TMC," he said.
The home minister said as many as 212 BJP workers have been killed in West Bengal in political violence and added that people will avenge these murders with their votes in the 2026 assembly polls.
Banerjee has destroyed West Bengal, Shah alleged, citing political violence, corruption, appeasement in state. The state's development is Modi's top priority but it can only happen when there is a government conducive to the prime minister's agenda, he said.
He urged people to ensure a big win for the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls.
"We must ensure that the BJP forms the next government in West Bengal. To achieve this, we must win the maximum number of Lok Sabha seats from the state in the next Parliamentary elections," Shah emphasised, echoing sentiments expressed during an April rally when he set a target of winning over 35 seats in the state.

NDTV reported that the Jamiat Ulama objected to students walking the ramp in burqas and said that it is a piece of cloth to cover the body and not meant for fashion.&nbsp;
The college has however backed the students.&nbsp;
The controversy surrounding the Shri Ram College fashion show in Muzaffarnagar started after a video of the event went viral. The three-day event, named Fashion Splash, featured students showcasing both Western and traditional attire.&nbsp;

Gabbar Singh Negi's house in the Lalpani area of the town suddenly came to life on Tuesday night as the news about of the safe evacuation of 41 workers trapped at Sikyara tunnel reached his kin who had been glued to the TV set waiting the whole day for the good news.
Gabbar Singh, who was among the trapped workers, was lauded by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami for keeping up the morale of his fellow workers during the rescue operation which lasted 17 days.
Whenever Dhami spoke to the trapped workers during the operation, Gabbar Singh came on the line on their behalf to give him updates on their health condition.
As the news about their evacuation broke on TV, his relatives clapped for him, lit diyas, and burst firecrackers to celebrate his freedom.
There had been no Diwali celebrations at his home this year as the tunnel collapsed on the morning of the festival of lights.
"Our Diwali was celebrated on Tuesday night as we heard the news. I thank god for what he has done for us. My husband has won the battle of life with the almighty's blessings. I also thank the prime minister and the chief minister for throwing all their might into the operation to secure their safe exit," Gabbar Singh's wife Yashoda Devi told PTI.
"It was such a relief when he informed us on the phone about his well-being," she said with tears in her eyes.
His elder son Vikas Negi, studying in class 12, praised the Central and state governments and said they had given a big gift to the family by returning his father safely.
Gabbar Singh's father-in-law, 80-year-old Dilip Singh Choudhary, who had come to his daughter Yashoda Devi's house after the incident, said he had never heard of or seen such a successful rescue operation in his life.
"The speed and manner in which they worked is incomparable," he said.
Sunita Kotnala, a neighbour, said she salutes the patience and courage of the workers who held themselves together despite being stuck in the tunnel for days.
Gabbar Singh, originally a resident of Charekh village of Dugadda block, came to Lalpani (Kotdwar) about 12 years ago and settled with his family.
Yashoda Devi said her husband has been working in big construction companies for almost 20 years. Before this, he also worked in the construction of the Delhi Metro.
He also worked on various construction projects in Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. He went to Uttarkashi in 2018 to work with construction company Navayuva where he works as a foreman, she said.&nbsp;
