The Congress is likely to get four ministerial berths in the new government in Bihar as JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar snapped ties with the BJP and joined hands with the RJD-led alliance, PTI sources said on Tuesday.
PTI sources said Kumar spoke to both Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi soon after resigning from his post of chief minister. He is also learnt to have thanked the Congress leadership for extending support in the formation of the new government.
Besides the four ministerial berths, the Congress has also sought the post of Speaker of the state assembly, but Kumar is not keen on giving that, sources said.
The Congress has 19 MLAs in the 243-member Bihar Assembly while the JD(U) has 45, RJD 79, CPI(ML) 12, and CPI and CPI(M) each have two legislators. The BJP has 77 MLAs in Bihar while the Jitan Ram Manjhi-led Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) has 4. The House has one Independent MLA while one seat is vacant.
Bihar Congress president Madan Mohan Jha and the party's in-charge of Bihar affairs Bhakta Charan Das were present at the meeting of Nitish Kumar, Tejashwi Yadav and leaders of other parties.
All 19 legislators of the Congress later attended a dinner meeting at the residence of the CLP leader in the Bihar assembly in Patna.
Top Congress leadership in Delhi however, remained silent on the developments in Bihar and confabulations over the new government formation in the state.
Earlier, the Congress said it will be a part of the non-BJP alliance in Bihar to help strengthen secular forces.
The party said that like in Maharashtra where it helped stitch together the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government by supporting the Shiv Sena which was ideologically different from it, it will align with Kumar who has been with them in the past.
"Ours is an ideological battle and we are not fighting for power. The Congress will support any non-BJP government and help strengthen secular forces," Congress general secretary Tariq Anwar earlier told PTI.
"Because Nitish Kumar is leaving the BJP and coming over, we will support him," he said, adding the Congress will take whatever steps that are needed to strengthen secular forces and defeat the communal forces.
Taking a swipe at the BJP, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, tweeted, "In March 2020, Modi sarkar postponed COVID-19 lockdown to engineer the fall of the Kamal Nath government in Madhya Pradesh. Now, it cuts short Parliament session knowing its coalition government in Bihar is going. What goes up must come down!" A meeting of the RJD-led Grand Alliance, comprising the Left and the Congress, also took place at Rabri Devi’s house, where all the MLAs are said to have signed a letter to support Kumar.
Nitish Kumar is understood to have told JD(U) legislators and MPs, at a meeting he convened at his official residence, that he had been driven against the wall by the BJP which tried to weaken his party, first by propping up Chirag Paswan’s rebellion and later through its former national president RCP Singh.
Relations between the BJP and the JD(U) have been worsening in the wake of disagreements over a host of issues including caste census, population control and the 'Agnipath' defence recruitment scheme.

A day after he tested positive for Covid-19, Bihar Assembly Speaker Vijay Kumar Sinha said his test reports have come out negative.
His Covid-19 claim comes amid brewing political storm in Bihar, where he will play a key role in determining the legitimacy of any new formulation.
Sinha, a BJP MLA, ebulliently announced on Twitter that his test reports on Monday were negative. A day earlier, he had tested positive.
Many took to the micro-blogging site to express astonishment at the speed with which the Speaker was declared Covid negative, and the fact that the health portfolio is also held by BJP’s Mangal Pandey.
On Monday night, members of the Ethics Committee of the assembly, headed by another BJP leader Ram Narayan Mandal, met Sinha and submitted a report.
While Mandal declined to divulge details, citing confidentiality, sources in the party said the report was about an incident of March last year when opposition RJD MLAs had held the Speaker hostage inside his chair and police was called in.

A day after he tested positive for Covid-19, Bihar Assembly Speaker Vijay Kumar Sinha said his test reports have come out negative.
His Covid-19 claim comes amid brewing political storm in Bihar, where he will play a key role in determining the legitimacy of any new formulation.
Sinha, a BJP MLA, ebulliently announced on Twitter that his test reports on Monday were negative. A day earlier, he had tested positive.

On Monday night, members of the Ethics Committee of the assembly, headed by another BJP leader Ram Narayan Mandal, met Sinha and submitted a report.
While Mandal declined to divulge details, citing confidentiality, sources in the party said the report was about an incident of March last year when opposition RJD MLAs had held the Speaker hostage inside his chair and police was called in.
The sources said the report indicts about 18 MLAs, whose names were not known.

Meanwhile, the boy was arrested by the local police after the parents of the minor girl filed a complaint against him.&nbsp;

As the fate of Bihar's NDA coalition government hangs in the balance amid reports of a tiff between the ruling JD (U)-BJP alliance, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to meet Governor Phagu Chauhan at 1 pm on Tuesday. 

In July 2017, Kumar left the Mahagathbandhan comprising of RJD, Congress, and other parties to join hands with the BJP, and continued as chief minister. &nbsp;

After ending the alliance with the BJP, JD(U) leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to meet Governor Phagu Chauhan on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the JD(U) and the Opposition RJD MLAs, reportedly, held separate meetings in Patna sparking speculations of a possible alliance between the two parties after Kumar snapped ties with BJP.
In 2015, JD(U) contested and won assembly polls in alliance with RJD. In July 2017, Kumar left the Mahagathbandhan comprising of RJD, Congress, and other parties to join hands with the BJP and continued as chief minister. &nbsp;
Earlier, eaders from the Nitish Kumar-led party dismissed the speculations and said that today&rsquo;s meeting with the MLA's was 'nothing out of the ordinary'.

&ldquo;Our party had held many such meetings of MPs and MLAs in the past. We have been told that the current meeting has been called to discuss organisational matters. Never heard about any major crisis in the NDA,&rdquo; Rajya Sabha MP Ram Nath Thakur told PTI.
There are also reports of the BJP holding a meeting at Deputy Chief Minister Tarkishor Prasad&rsquo;s residence.&nbsp;
The meetings have been called following a phone conversation that Nitish reportedly had with Congress president Sonia Gandhi. JD(U) leaders were said to have spoken to RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav earlier.&nbsp;

A group of over 300 Dalits who had embarked on a 'Coin Yatra' from Ahmedabad to Delhi on August 1 with two truckloads of ₹1 coin to the value of ₹20 lakh and a 1,000 kg brass coin was stopped in its tracks at the Rajasthan-Haryana border by the police on Sunday night.

The aim of the yatra was to send a message to the political class that untouchability exists even after 75 years of independence and to donate the money towards the construction of the new Parliament complex.

The 1,000-kilogram brass coin had the faces of Bhim Rao Ambedkar and Gautam Buddha emblazoned on either side. The aim of the yatra was to send a message to the political class that untouchability exists even after 75 years of independence and donate the money towards the construction of the new Parliament complex. The brass coin was made from melting brass utensils donated by Dalit families.
The activists were shown a letter from the Home Ministry, stating that the yatra not be allowed to proceed, Dalit activist Martin Macwan, who helped organise the Yatra told The Hindu.
After being denied entry to Delhi, the group decided to return to Ahmedabad.
The yatra, launched by Dalit rights group, Navsarjan Trust, from its campus in Nani Devti village, also had a statue of Dr. Ambedkar and a sculpture of the Indian Constitution.
The contingent had members from 14 states. The word &ldquo;untouchability&rdquo; has been etched on the brass coin in 15 different languages and on the side with Dr Ambedkar&rsquo;s image is engraved: &ldquo;Will the 1947 dream of an untouchability-free India be a reality in 2047?&rdquo;

In Kerala's Malappuram, a local protested against the potholes on road in a very unique way. The man, identified as Hamza Porali, performed yoga in front of a local MLA, UA Latheef. When the local leader’s car reached the spot, Porali started meditating in the pothole. Also, the man then stands up to do another standing yoga pose in front of the MLA.

Reacting furiously to the development, senior leader Sushil Kumar Modi, who had served as Kumar’s deputy for more than a decade and is considered as his most trusted man in the BJP, accused the former boss of telling “blatant lie”.
“It is a blatant lie that BJP had made RCP Singh a minister without the consent of Nitish ji. Another lie is that the BJP was trying to split the JD(U). He was looking for an excuse to break ties. The BJP will return to power with a thumping majority in 2024," Modi tweeted.
Notably, Kumar had cited a “unanimous sentiment” in his JD(U) as the reason behind making the sudden move. His party’s ties with the BJP, though dating back to the 1990s, barring a four years hiatus that began with his first breaking away in 2013, have been chequered.
However, in the recent past the two parties squabbled on a whole range of issues though the tipping point, according to JD(U) sources, came with alleged attempts of RCP Singh, a former national president who has for some time come to be seen as “BJP’s man”, to split the party.
At a press conference here soon after Kumar met the governor, along with RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad accused the chief minister of inconsistency in his beliefs.

While SAD severed ties in protest against the three farm laws, Shiv Sena dumped the BJP and allied with NCP and Congress in Maharashtra in 2019 over the issue of the chief ministerial post.
Though a big faction of Shiv Sena led by rebel-leader Eknath Shinde joined hands with BJP and helped it come to power in Maharashtra again. 
Between 2014 to 2019 - Mehbooba Mufti-led Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) and N Chandrababu Naidu-led Telugu Desam Party (TDP) - were the major ones to move out of the alliance.
