Security forces launch massive anti-terror operation across Jammu region

In a determined effort to combat terrorism, security forces have launched an extensive search operation across 23 locations in Jammu’s higher reaches and forested areas along the Line of Control (LoC). The operation focuses on areas with a history of terrorist activity, especially in light of a series of attacks in the region last year.

The Jammu region has witnessed a sharp surge in terrorism since 2021, with the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch initially bearing the brunt. In 2024, violence spread to six more districts, leading to 44 deaths, including 18 security personnel and 13 terrorists. Despite a decline in terrorist incidents in Rajouri and Poonch, fresh concerns arose after attacks were reported in Reasi, Doda, Kishtwar, Kathua, Udhampur, and Jammu between April and May.

The current operation, involving the army, police, and central armed police forces, is concentrated in the Chenab Valley districts of Kishtwar, Doda, and Ramban (10 locations), followed by Rajouri-Poonch (seven), Udhampur (three), Reasi (two), and Jammu (one). The focus is on dominating vulnerable areas, particularly dense forest zones, to neutralize terrorist threats and disrupt the activities of Pakistan-based handlers.

Last year, fatalities were recorded across multiple districts, with Doda, Kathua, and Reasi each reporting nine deaths, followed by Kishtwar (five), Udhampur (four), Jammu and Rajouri (three each), and Poonch (two). Among the victims were 14 civilians, including seven pilgrims killed in a bus attack and three Village Defence Guards (VDGs) targeted in Udhampur and Kishtwar.

The operation is expected to intensify in the months ahead, aiming to maintain peace and prevent further escalation in the region as summer approaches. Security officials remain committed to ensuring stability in Jammu’s vulnerable areas amidst ongoing challenges.
