India’s first 3-D printed post office in Bengaluru: all you need to know

India has built its first 3-D printed post office in Bengaluru. While conventional construction methods would take six to eight months, PTI reported that the new post office was built in 45 days.

Experts from IIT Madras and construction company Larsen & Toubro Limited jointly completed the flagship project.

The construction of the building cost Rs 23 lakh, around 30-40% less than the conventional method, the Indian Express reported.

The 3-D printed post office, which has a built-up area of 1,021 square feet, required a balance of concrete properties, including flowability, quick hardening for load-bearing capacity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the effort in a tweet saying that it represents the spirit of a self-reliant India. “Every Indian would be proud to see India's first 3D printed Post Office at Cambridge Layout, Bengaluru. A testament to our nation's innovation and progress, it also embodies the spirit of a self-reliant India,” he wrote.

The new post office building located in the residential Cambridge Layout was inaugurated by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
