DMK protested in Lok Sabha regarding a Tamil Nadu temple lamp lighting controversy, causing a brief adjournment. The issue is currently under Supreme Court review after a Madras High Court ruling.

Protests by DMK Members Halt Lok Sabha, Issue Over Temple Lamp Lighting

New Delhi, Dec 5 (PTI) Lok Sabha proceedings faced a brief halt until 12 noon on Friday due to demonstrations by DMK members concerning a controversy over the lighting of lamps in Tamil Nadu.

The Tamil Nadu government, led by the DMK, has approached the Supreme Court to challenge a Madras High Court ruling. This ruling allows devotees of the Arulmighu Subramaniya Swamy Temple to light the traditional 'Karthigai Deepam' lamp at 'Deepathoon', a stone lamp pillar situated on the Thiruparankundram hillock near a dargah.

DMK members attempted to bring this issue to light in the House, with some resorting to protest in the Well of the House.

Speaker Om Birla addressed the protesting members, reminding them that the issue is currently sub judice and requesting that they return to their seats.

During the Question Hour, at least four questions along with their supplementary questions were addressed. However, as the protests persisted, the session was adjourned till 12 noon.
