Delhi Election 2025: The promises that could shape the capital’s future

As Delhi gears up for elections on February 5, the race is heating up with AAP, BJP, and Congress unveiling manifestos filled with promises to woo voters. From free electricity to cash transfers, public transport perks, and more, here’s a closer look at what’s on offer.

Power Play: Free Electricity
AAP: Up to 200 units free, with a 50% subsidy beyond that for tenants, plus 20,000 litres of free water per month.
BJP: No changes to the existing AAP scheme.
Congress: Raises the stakes, offering 300 units free.

Empowering Women with Cash
AAP: Plans to double monthly transfers to Rs 2,100 under Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana for families earning under Rs 3 lakh annually.
BJP: Mahila Samriddhi Yojana offers Rs 2,500 monthly for low-income women.
Congress: Pyari Didi Yojana matches BJP’s Rs 2,500 promise for women from low-income families.

Healthcare: Battle for Better Coverage
AAP: Free treatment in private and government hospitals for senior citizens, with no income cap.
BJP: Health insurance under Ayushman Bharat offers Rs 10 lakh for senior citizens and Rs 5 lakh more per family.
Congress: Tops the charts with Rs 25 lakh coverage for all residents.

Investing in Education and Youth
AAP: Scholarships for Dalit students studying abroad, covering fees and travel.
BJP: Free education “from KG to PG” for those in need, plus stipends for SC students in technical courses.
Congress: Yuva Udaan Yojana offers Rs 8,500 monthly for jobless youth and apprenticeships.

Old Age Pensions
AAP: Rs 2,000 for those aged 60-69, Rs 2,500 for those 70+ and minorities.
BJP: Increases payouts to Rs 2,500 and Rs 3,000 respectively.
Congress: Silent on this front.

Travel Perks
AAP: Free bus rides for male students and 50% off on Delhi Metro fares, building on its free travel scheme for women.
BJP: Promises to keep AAP’s bus travel scheme.
Congress: No such proposals.

LPG Subsidy
AAP: No promises here.
BJP: Rs 500 subsidy per cylinder and a free cylinder on Holi and Diwali.
Congress: Cylinders at Rs 500.

Extras: What Makes Each Manifesto Unique
AAP: Life insurance of Rs 10 lakh, Rs 5 lakh accident cover, Rs 1 lakh for daughters’ weddings, and Rs 2,500 for uniforms for auto drivers. Priests and Granthis to receive Rs 18,000 monthly.
BJP: Nutrition kits and Rs 21,000 for pregnant women, Rs 5 meals at Atal Canteens, and insurance for domestic helps and auto drivers.
Congress: Monthly free ration kits packed with essentials.

What Voters Are Saying?
In 2020, AAP swept the polls with 62 seats, leaving BJP with just 8 and Congress with none. This time, predictions suggest AAP might drop to 37-39 seats, with BJP gaining ground. Congress, however, is still expected to linger at just 3 seats.

As February 8 approaches, Delhiites are weighing the promises against the performance. Will the manifestos win over voters, or will skepticism prevail? The answer lies in the ballot box.
