Assam CM announced a Rs 600-crore project for skill centers with Tata's Nelco; an IIM in Guwahati was also endorsed.

Assam CM Announces Rs 600 Crore Skill Education Initiative

Guwahati, Aug 22 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that his cabinet has sanctioned a Rs 600-crore initiative to establish skill education centers throughout the state in collaboration with the Tata group firm Nelco.

Addressing the media following a cabinet meeting on Thursday, Sarma stated that the project will be a joint financial effort between Nelco and the Assam government.

"The state cabinet has nominated Tata's Nelco as the strategic partner alongside Sarba Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) for the rollout of a 50 hubs and 500 spokes model for skill education in Assam," he mentioned.

The project will cost a total of Rs 600 crore, with the Tata Group contributing 75 percent and the Assam government providing the rest, Sarma explained.

"Initially, 10 hubs and 70 spokes (smaller hubs) will be set up.

Both hub schools and their associated spoke schools will comprise secondary and higher secondary institutions authorized under SSA for skill education," he mentioned.

Each hub is planned to offer 10 advanced trades or sectors and will have two trainers.

Each spoke will offer two trades or sectors and also have two trainers.

The hub and spokes will be interconnected via satellite communication provided by Nelco.

Sarma also revealed the state cabinet's approval for the ceremonial distribution of sanction letters to 3,14,773 recipients under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G).

"The Assam cabinet extends heartfelt thanks to the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the announcement of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati," the CM stated.

This initiative will not only bolster higher education and research in the region but also create new prospects for growth, innovation, and opportunities for the youth of the northeast, he noted.

Sarma criticized the Congress, which was previously in power in Assam, for failing to secure an AIIMS or IIM during the tenure of the UPA government at the Centre.

"When the UPA government decided to establish an AIIMS and IIM, both were allocated to Shillong," he recalled, referencing IIM-Shillong and the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS).

The state cabinet has also approved naming the four-lane flyover on GNB Road from Dighali Pukhuri to Noonmati as the 'Maharaj Prithu Flyover' to inspire and motivate current and future generations of Assam's indigenous population, he added.
