 In the 2020 Assembly elections, Atishi secured the Kalkaji seat by defeating BJP's Dharambir Singh with a margin of over 10 percent.
Speaking to the media after filing her nomination, Atishi remarked, &ldquo;On the occasion of Makar Sankranti today, I have filed my nomination and I hope that, just as I have received love from the people of Kalkaji before, I will continue to receive the same in the future.&rdquo;

Addressing the FIR filed against her over alleged Model Code of Conduct violations, Atishi criticized the Election Commission&rsquo;s lack of action on BJP candidate Parvesh Verma&rsquo;s conduct. &ldquo;The whole country saw that Parvesh Verma was distributing money. Women came on TV and said that they were given Rs 1100 to press the lotus button. After that, he tweeted saying that he was distributing glasses in a health camp. Then he was distributing sheets and bedspreads with his name in Kidwai Nagar. The Election Commission does not see any violation of the Model Code of Conduct in this,&rdquo; Atishi said.
She added, &ldquo;We went to the Election Commission multiple times, and they assured us that the election would be fair. Investigations are still ongoing against Parvesh Verma, while an FIR has already been filed against me without any investigation.&rdquo;
Earlier this week, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal participated in a roadshow with former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia. At 43, Atishi became Delhi's third woman Chief Minister, following the footsteps of Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit. On September 17, 2024, Kejriwal resigned as Chief Minister and submitted his resignation to Delhi's Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. Atishi claimed the right to form the new government soon after, following Kejriwal&rsquo;s release from Tihar jail in the excise policy case. Kejriwal stated he would return to the Chief Minister's post only if he secured a renewed mandate and received a "certificate of honesty" from the people of Delhi in the February 2025 elections.
Atishi was sworn in as Chief Minister of Delhi on September 22 after being nominated by Arvind Kejriwal. The Delhi Assembly elections will take place in a single phase on February 5, with the vote count scheduled for February 8.

The best bull will be awarded a tractor valued at Rs 11 lakhs, while the best bull-tamer will receive a car worth Rs 8 lakhs, along with additional prizes. The remaining two events will take place at Palamedu on January 15 and Alanganallur on January 16. Strict regulations and security measures are in place for the smooth conduct of these events.
According to instructions from the Madurai district administration, each bull is allowed to participate in only one of the three local Jallikattu events. Each bull must be accompanied solely by its owner and a trainer familiar with the animal. Registration for both bull owners and tamers is mandatory via the official district administration website, "madurai.nic.in." All submitted documents are thoroughly verified, and only eligible participants are issued a downloadable token. This token is required for entry into the event, with no exceptions.
The Jallikattu competitions in Madurai, especially in Alanganallur, are internationally recognized as vibrant celebrations of Tamil heritage and rural bravery. With preparations in full swing, this year&rsquo;s events are expected to draw significant participation and global attention. The first Jallikattu of 2025 was held on Saturday at Thachankurichi village in Pudukkottai district, which is known for hosting the most Jallikattu events in Tamil Nadu. The district boasts the highest number of vadivasal (bull entry points) and typically organizes over 120 Jallikattu events, more than 30 bullock cart races, and 50 vadamadu (tethered bull) events from January through May 31.

In the event, a bull is released into a crowd, and participants attempt to seize the large hump on the bull's back, striving to bring it to a halt. The origins of Jallikattu trace back to 400-100 BCE, where it was played by the Ayars, an ethnic group in India. The term "Jallikattu" is derived from two words: "Jalli" (meaning silver and gold coins) and "Kattu" (meaning tied).

BJP leader Amit Malviya swiftly reacted, suggesting that Kejriwal should focus on "saving your New Delhi seat for now" rather than discussing larger issues.
In a separate address at Seelampur, Delhi, Rahul Gandhi criticized both the BJP and AAP. He questioned the actions taken by Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister Kejriwal to tackle inflation and support the poor. &ldquo;Is inflation increasing or decreasing? What did Kejriwal and PM Modi say on inflation? They promised to reduce it. Has it been reduced? The poor are getting poorer, and the rich are getting richer,&rdquo; Gandhi remarked.
He also pointed out the disparity in wealth, stating, &ldquo;There are 100 to 150 billionaires controlling the country. They receive all the privileges. Have you ever seen PM Modi speak about Adani and Ambani? Has Kejriwal ever said anything about Adani?&rdquo;

The Akharas took &lsquo;Amrit Snan&rsquo; of the Maha Kumbh Mela on Tuesday on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.
Shri Panchayati Akhara Mahanirvani and Shri Shambhu Panchayati Atal Akhara were the first ones to take 'Amrit Snan' on Makar Sankranti.
The first 'Amrit Snan' is special in many ways. It took place a day after the first major 'snan' on Monday in the Sangam area on the occasion of 'Paush Purnima'.
Thirteen Akharas of seers from different sects are participating in the Maha Kumbh.
Chants of 'Har Har Mahadev', 'Jai Shri Ram', and 'Jai Ganga Maiyya' chants could be heard as the devotees moved towards the bathing area in groups despite the freezing waters during the cold winter season.
The Akharas had received information about the dates of 'Amrit Snan' and their bathing order.
The Maha Kumbh Mela administration has issued an order about the date, order and time for 'Amrit Snan' of 13 Akharas of the Sanatan Dharma on Makar Sankranti and Basant Panchami, the Uttar Pradesh government said in a statement on Monday.
Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad (ABAP) president Mahant Ravindra Puri told PTI earlier that the first 'Amrit Snan' of this Maha Kumbh would begin at 5.30 am on Tuesday.
He also said the common terms such as 'shahi snan' and 'peshwai' associated with the Kumbh have been changed to 'Amrit Snan' and 'Chhavni Pravesh' respectively.
Asked what prompted them to coin the terminologies, Mahant Puri, who is also the president of the Mansa Devi Temple Trust in Haridwar, said, "All of us speak words in Hindi and Urdu. It cannot happen that we do not speak any Urdu word."
"But we thought that when it comes to our Gods, we should make efforts to have a name in Sanskrit language or have a 'Sanatani' name. Our intention is not to make it as Hindus versus Muslims," he added.
This 'Amrit Snan' will be the first such snaan after the grand Pran Pratishtha of Lord Ram Lalla in Ayodhya, according to Ashutosh Varshney, the convener of Prayagraj-based Ram Naam Bank (an NGO).
"It is a divine coincidence that two 'snaans' in the Maha Kumbh are on consecutive days. The major 'snan' of 'Paush Purnima' was on Monday while the Makar Sankranti is on Tuesday," Varshney said.
"As a result of this, a large number of devotees, seers and commoners from different walks of life have already descended on the holy city of Prayagraj," he added.
The present edition of the Kumbh is being held after 12 years, though seers claim the celestial permutations and combinations for the event are taking place after 144 years, making the occasion even more auspicious.

The AAP delegation, which included Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, and party MP Sanjay Singh, met with ECI representatives. Post-meeting, Kejriwal confirmed that the Election Commission had granted the party&rsquo;s request for the transfer.

The issue at the center of the meeting was the transfer of Avadh Ojha&rsquo;s voter ID from Greater Noida to Delhi. Kejriwal emphasized the importance of this transfer, stating that it was necessary for Ojha to be able to file his nomination papers and contest the election.
Kejriwal mentioned that Ojha had submitted Form 8 on January 7, the final day for such transfers. However, he accused the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer of unilaterally changing the deadline to January 6, an act Kejriwal labeled as "unlawful" and suggested was intended to prevent Ojha from running for election.
Besides Ojha&rsquo;s issue, the delegation also raised concerns about irregularities in voter registrations linked to addresses of senior BJP leaders in the New Delhi constituency.
Arvind Kejriwal had previously written a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, highlighting the issue of alleged voter list irregularities in New Delhi. Kejriwal, who represents New Delhi in the assembly, will face BJP&rsquo;s Parvesh Verma and Congress&rsquo; Sandeep Dikshit in the upcoming elections.
In his letter, Kejriwal expressed concerns over BJP&rsquo;s efforts to manipulate voter lists, accusing the party of trying to undermine the integrity of the election process in New Delhi.
Kejriwal stated in the letter, "I write to you with grave concern regarding the repeated attempts by members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to manipulate the voter lists in the New Delhi Assembly constituency in a systematic effort to subvert the integrity of the upcoming elections."
The Delhi Assembly elections are set to take place on February 5, with the results expected to be declared on February 8.

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi could not file her nomination from the Kalkaji Assembly constituency on Monday, an AAP leader said. &nbsp; Accompanied by senior party leader Manish Sisodia, the chief minister held a roadshow after paying obeisance at a gurudwara in Giri Nagar and then proceeded towards the office of the district election officer to file her nomination. &nbsp; However, as the roadshow got her delayed, she went to the Election Commission office to join AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, for a meeting with officials at 3 pm without filing the nomination papers. &nbsp; Nominations for the assembly elections can be filed every day until 3 pm. Atishi is now scheduled to file her papers on Tuesday. &nbsp; Before commencing her rally, Atishi, accompanied by AAP leader Manish Sisodia, visited Gurudwara Shri Guru Gobind Sahib in Giri Nagar. Earlier in the day, she offered prayers at the Kalkaji Temple, dedicated to Maa Kali, seeking blessings for her campaign.
"Before filing my nomination today, I came to seek the blessings of Maa Kali at the Kalkaji Temple. I believe Maa Kalka's blessings will always remain with me, the Aam Aadmi Party, and the people of the Kalkaji constituency," she told reporters.
Reflecting on her work in the area, Atishi said she has , "I have worked tirelessly in my constituency for the last five years. The people of Kalkaji are my family, they see me as their daughter and their sister. I am not just a representative, I am a part of their lives." &nbsp; Taking a jibe at the BJP, she accused the party of being anti-poor. She said the BJP is a 'jhuggi virodhi' and 'gareeb virodhi' party and added that the AAP is committed to uplifting the marginalised communities.
Atishi is set to face a stiff challenge in the constituency from BJP's Ramesh Singh Bidhuri, a seasoned politician and her main opponent in the constituency.
Bidhuri, a former MP from South Delhi and a three-time MLA from Tughlakabad, is known for his strong political record, winning elections in 2003, 2008, and 2013.
The Congress has also entered the fray with Alka Lamba, National President of Mahila Congress.
Lamba, who was with the Congress from 1994 to 2014 before briefly joining the Aam Aadmi Party, has now returned to her former party, vying a comeback in this high-stakes election.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh took to X to remind Modi of his past comments on the rupee's value when he first assumed office. Ramesh wrote, &ldquo;When Mr. Narendra Modi took over as PM, he was about to turn 64, and the rupee was at 58.58 to the dollar. He waxed eloquent on making the rupee stronger and mockingly linked its fall to his predecessor's age.&rdquo;
Ramesh further added, "Well, now as Mr. Modi prepares to turn 75 later in the year, the rupee has already declined well past 86 to the dollar. As the fall continues, Mr. Modi has clearly been hoist with his own petard!"
The rupee&rsquo;s significant drop occurred in the midst of the foreign exchange session on January 13, with the currency opening at 86.12. It reached a historic low of 86.59 before slightly recovering to 86.50 against the dollar.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Z-Morh tunnel, Omar said, &ldquo;PM Modi, after securing his third term, participated in the International Yoga Day in Srinagar, where people were promised that elections would be held, and they would get to choose their own government. You (PM Modi) fulfilled your promise, and polls were held within four months. A new government was elected, and the result is, as chief minister, I am talking to you here.&rdquo;

He highlighted the enthusiastic participation of the people in the elections, emphasizing that there were no allegations of rigging or misuse of power throughout the process.
&ldquo;Prime Minister, you had also promised the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. People keep asking me about this, and I keep reminding them that PM Modi fulfilled his promise of holding elections. I believe soon this promise will also be fulfilled, and Jammu and Kashmir will once again be a state in this country,&rdquo; Omar stated.
The chief minister acknowledged the peace-building efforts along the borders under PM Modi&rsquo;s leadership, which he said have significantly benefited remote areas. He mentioned regions such as Machil, Gurez, Karnah, and Keran, noting improvements in development and tourism with increased tourist arrivals. Omar also lauded the impact of the newly inaugurated Sonamarg tunnel, which will ensure year-round connectivity for people living in the upper reaches. &ldquo;With the opening of the Sonamarg tunnel, people from the upper reaches will no longer need to travel to the plains, as the road connectivity will be available year-round,&rdquo; he said.

Six army personnel were injured in a mine blast along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district. The soldiers, on patrol duty in the Nowshera sector, stepped on a landmine.

At least six Army personnel sustained injuries following a mine blast along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Makri area of Bhawani sector, located in Jammu and Kashmir&rsquo;s Rajouri district. Fortunately, all soldiers are reported to be in stable condition and are receiving treatment at the Army hospital in Rajouri.
The incident occurred when the soldiers were on a routine patrol near Khamba Fort in Nowshera sector at approximately 10:45 am. One of the soldiers accidentally stepped on a landmine, triggering the explosion. The injured personnel were quickly transported to the hospital, and their injuries, though serious, were not life-threatening.
The areas near the LoC are often equipped with landmines as part of an anti-infiltration obstacle system. These mines, however, can sometimes be displaced by rain, leading to accidents. This unfortunate incident underscores the inherent dangers soldiers face while operating in such volatile zones.
The Indian Army has launched an investigation to understand the cause of the blast and to enhance safety measures for personnel serving in these high-risk regions.
Recently, four soldiers were killed in a road accident in J&amp;K&rsquo;s Bandipora district when a vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge due to bad weather and poor visibility. Two soldiers were injured in the incident.

The controversy stems from Zuckerberg&rsquo;s statements during a podcast on January 10, where he inaccurately suggested that incumbent governments, including India&rsquo;s, lost power in the elections held in 2024. Discussing the global political landscape post-COVID, he remarked, &ldquo;2024 was a very big election year around the world, and all these countries, India, had elections. The incumbents basically lost every single one. There is some sort of a global phenomenon &ndash; whether it was because of inflation or the economic policies to deal with COVID or just how the governments dealt with COVID. It seems to have had this effect that&rsquo;s global.&rdquo;
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw was quick to counter Zuckerberg&rsquo;s claims, pointing out the inaccuracies. He highlighted that the people of India had, in fact, reaffirmed their trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the NDA government during the elections.

Five coaches of a passenger train from Villupuram to Puducherry derailed near Villupuram railway station here on Tuesday morning, said railway officials adding that a major accident was averted as the train stopped immediately after a loud noise was heard.
According to officials, all passengers were safely evacuated from the train. Railway staff and engineers rushed to the site and are actively working to repair the derailed train.
Railway staff worked and the route was cleared for other trains, authorities are investigating whether the incident was due to a technical fault or sabotage.
The Villupuram Railway Police have begun an in-depth inquiry into the matter.
The MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train, which departed from Villupuram at 5:25 am, derailed while navigating a curve. The loco pilot acted quickly to bring the train to a stop. MEMU trains are designed for short-distance travel, typically covering around 38 kilometres.
