Scientists from the Emory University in the United States have developed a 'flexible smart skin' inspired by Chameleons. The skin changes colour when it reacts to heat or sunlight. To create the skin, scientists embedded photonic crystal arrays into hydrogels. When the hydrogel expands or contracts, the spacing between the arrays changes, resulting in colour change. While real-life application of the artificial skin requires more research, it is a great starting point.
